Thorncliffe is one of Calgary’s oldest north-western communities, a neighbourhood that transitions from inner city to suburban living. The lifestyle is relaxed and safe, a great place to raise a family. The borders of this community are formed by McKnight Blvd, 64th Ave NE, 14th St NW and Deerfoot Trail. With many parks and paths, Thorncliffe is a community that feels spacious and open.

The people of Thorncliffe form a unique demographic not found anywhere else in the city. Just fewer than 9000 people live here in their homes and apartments. Just over half of the population live in single-family houses and the rest are split between low-rise apartment buildings, attached townhomes, duplexes, and even a few converted basement and garage suites. Over one-quarter of the neighbourhood claims an immigrant background, first-generation Canadians who moved here in their lifetime. The average income is lower than Calgary’s standard, and the education level is slightly lower as well. Over 20% of the population don’t hold a high school diploma. The average age reflects the neighbourhood, more mature than surrounding communities. Over half of the population have lived here for over 5 years, a good sign that Thorncliffe has a reputation that keeps people living here long-term.

The Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association covers the 9000 residents living in this area. They have a facility and hall that they manage and rent out to members of the community. It has an ice rink, several rooms in which they offer classes, community bingo, and hold events like the yearly Stampede Breakfast.

Amenities near Thorncliffe Real Estate

Thorncliffe sits in a prime location, on the border of inner-city with a large industrial area just off its borders.  This means that it’s the perfect community for many businesses and services to set up their stores like Safeway Thorncliffe. That has left Thorncliffe rich with options for shopping, eating, and entertainment. The most basic shopping and retail options are Deerfoot City across the Deerfoot on 64th Ave.

The community’s position on Deerfoot Trail makes it easy for residents to travel anywhere they need to with ease. A few minutes and they can be down south, in the city centre, or at the airport. The city core can also be accessed via Centre St which runs directly through the middle of the community.  

More than half a dozen churches can be found in the area, many different religions and denominations finding their home in Thorncliffe. A popular site for many residents is Nose Hill Park, which many use on a daily basis. Paths and trails crisscross this immense park, one of the largest in North America. It serves as excellent grounds for walking, biking, cross country skiing and much more. Smaller park can also be found scattered throughout the neighbourhood while several trails run along the Deerfoot in the valley, extending all the way to the downtown core.

Schools near Thorncliffe Homes for Sale

There are many schools that live in Thorncliffe, so students here are spoiled for choices in the public and Catholic sectors. These schools include Colonel Sanders Elementary, grades Kindergarten through to Grade 4. There is Thorncliffe School and Corpus Christi School which offers K-12 education in the faith-based Catholic program. Other schools nearby include John G Diefenbaker High School, Sir John A MacDonald School and Colonel Irvine Junior High.   

John G Diefenbaker School’s dedication to the International Baccalaureate program makes it rank consistently well in the city and the province. The Fraser Institute ranks it in the top 50 schools. Nearby James Fowler High School also has a high reputation in the community, a school with a large presence of new Canadians and immigrants with English as their second language.
