The borders of Upper Mount Royal are 14th St SW and the bluffs that surround Cliff Bungalow and Elbow Park. Royal Ave behind the Western Canada High School is the northern edge of the community.
The people here form an exclusive community with demographics that are quite unlike any other neighbourhood. There are just over 2400 residents living in this prestigious area. The community is primarily made up of single-family homes, many of them large estates that have a rich history to them.
There are some newer luxury apartments that have popped up in the area, although they are in the minority of housing options here. Upper Mount Royal residents earn a very good income, much higher than the Calgary average. They tend to be more mature in age as well.
The community is 19% immigrant, high net-worth individuals who have moved here from many other countries. The education rate is very high with three-quarters holding a certification or degree from post-secondary institutions.
The community is very attractive to home buyers so homes for sale in Upper Mount Royal tend to be rarer than other neighbourhoods. In fact, just about two-thirds of the neighbourhood have lived here for longer than 5 years, a sign that it’s a well-regarded area to live.
The vast majority choose to operate their own vehicles although there are several walking options due to this community being so close to the downtown core.
The Mount Royal Community Association has the task of caring for its members and residents. They do this by maintaining a clean neighbourhood and provide events that connect neighbours together.
They do this by holding sports programs, informative courses targeted towards residents, and fitness classes for the people to participate in.
All the lifestyle amenities one would expect from a community like this one are here. The neighbourhood is situated just behind 17th Ave, a centre of activity and events. Much of Calgary’s culture and vibrant nightlife is found here in the restaurants, pubs, and unique stores.
The community is within walking distance of the best of this district in either direction. The C-Train station is located very close, which works well with the theme of walking to wherever the residents need to go.
As for amenities like transportation, many of the community’s inhabitants choose to drive. 14th St provides excellent access to escape the neighbourhood while 17th Ave is also a good road to travel towards the city centre or Crowchild Trail. This whole district becomes incredibly popular during the Calgary Stampede, a yearly event that draws in over 1 million visitors every year.
Close at hand is also the Repsol Sport Centre, a fitness destination for much of the inner city. The facility has swimming pools, a 10m dive platform into dive tanks, fully-equipped fitness centres, gyms for rental, and steam rooms and cold tubs for sports recovery.
The neighbourhood also borders Marda Loop, a popular destination for shopping and trendy cafes and restaurants. This area has been a highlight of Calgary’s inner city for decades, and it continues to draw in shoppers every day.
Upper Mount Royal students are served by good schools surrounding them. This obviously includes Western Canada High School which has an exceptional International Baccalaureate program for academic pursuit. Earl Grey School's motto is “Nothing But The Best”, evident in their academic success and ranking of 76th in the province. William Reid and Mount Royal School also have great programs for students here.
