The community of Red Carpet was developed in the late 1960s as a part of the Greater Forest Lawn area. This small neighbourhood has much in common with its neighbours, but retains a small, inviting sense of community. The neighbourhood is defined by the triangle of International Ave, 68th St SE and the CPR tracks.
There are just over 1700 residents in this small, exclusive area. The community is well isolated and feels very inward focussed. Of the options here, there is a large majority that chooses to live in the manufactured homes of the area, doublewides that accomodate more than half of the community. The rest are made up of modern, contemporary apartment buildings that houses several hundred of the population here. The income levels here are much lower than in other areas of the city, a place where the majority of the population are lower to middle-class Calgarians. The homes here have a high turnover rate with many options on the market at any one time. We find that the apartments offers a good sense of security for growing families. There is a population of 17% immigrants, a good proportion of those coming from places like India, Vietnam, or China. We tend to see lower education levels as well in places like this, but it’s still surrounded by good schools. This is an older, more mature community with many of the households at least 10 years older on average than a normal Calgarian family.
The Red Carpet community is pretty small, but it does have a few activities that are managed by the community association here. For the most part, the Penbrooke Meadows Community Association offers the residents a way to connect and feel as a part of the neighbourhood.

Living here does offer very affordable housing, but it has much more than that going for it. First off, commuting is a major part of the lives of residents here, and nothing is more convenient than the Stoney Trail ring road which connects Red Carpet with the rest of the city. The International Ave also connects the residents with the city centre and the downtown core. For those who must commute as a part of their work, this is an ideal place to live.
Residents like to use Elliston Park for it’s natural reserve. It’s full of pathways, fire pits, picnic tables, and open spaces to enjoy. The site is right next door to the community and has year-round activities to enjoy. The community also has a cricket pitch, one of the few in the city, within the neighbourhood. Many of the Asian and Indian residents love to use the cricket pitch to play a sport that isn’t played around the city much.
The community uses the local shopping over the ring road for much of their needs. It has large stores like Costco or Walmart to offer just about every necessity that residents could need. They also use Marlborough Mall for anything else, including professional services and ethnic stores run by locals in the area.

Red Carpet schools include Penbrooke Meadows School, GW Skene School, St Peter Elementary and James Short Memorial School. These cater to the elementary aged children, of which there are many. For older children, the nearest schools are Jack James High School, Forest Lawn High School, and Ernest Morrow Junior High School. The Fraser Institute, responsible for ranking schools, has placed Forest Lawn High at 244th in the province.
