High River Locations information

The community of High River is located in Alberta, Canada's Calgary Metropolitan Area. 68 kilometers (42 miles) south of Calgary, it is located at the intersection of Alberta Highways 2 and 23. Originally, the Blackfoot First Nation called the location Ispitzee, which translates to "place of high trees along running water." After the North-West Mounted Police arrived in 1870 and Treaty Number 7 was signed in 1877, settlers started moving into the area. The "The Crossing," a handy spot for people, horses, and cattle to cross the Highwood River, served as the focal point for the development of High River. The building of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway in 1892 aided in the town's development. On December 5, 1901, High River became a village, and on February 12, 1906, it became a town. The first mayor of the Town of High River was Daniel Edward Riley, a rancher in the area and future senator. Despite a slowdown during World War I, growth resumed following the conflict with the establishment of several industries and brick buildings. East of the town, one of the first air force stations in Canada was built in 1921. During World War II, High River's economy benefited from the construction of an elementary flying training school under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan at the same air station. High River kept expanding during the 1950s and 1960s. There was significant downtown renovation in the 1970s, and there is now ongoing reconstruction. The Town of High River had 14,324 residents in the 2021 Census of Population, up 5.4% from 13,594 in 2016. These residents were housed in 5,787 of the 5,950 total private homes in the town. Its population density was 645.5/km2 (1,671.9/sq mi) in 2021, with a land area of 22.19 km2 (8.57 sq mi). As of the 2019 municipal census, the Town of High River has 14,052 residents, a 19.3% increase from the 11,783 residents recorded in the 2010 municipal census. The Town of High River had 13,584 residents in the 2016 Census of Population, which was performed by Statistics Canada. This is a 5.1% decrease from the town's 2011 population of 12,930 residents, who were housed in 5,367 of the 5,655 total private homes. Its 2016 population density was 635.1/km2 (1,644.8/sq mi), with a land area of 21.39 km2 (8.26 sq mi).
