Living in Calgary vs Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver

While Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver as larger and, generally, have more renown around the globe, they all come with significant downsides inherent in larger urban centers. Traffic problems, crime rates, skyrocketing housing prices, and urban noise/light/air pollution to name a few. Not to disparage our neighbours – they are Canadian cities after all, so they will be filled with lovely people – but there are few places in the world where you get the perfect mix of big-city amenities, with an affordable lifestyle, big homes, family-friendly neighbourhoods, and some truly astounding outdoor spaces.

If this sounds too good to be true… don't worry. It's all right here in Cowtown. Whether it's for a visit, or as a home for you and your family, here are a few reasons why Calgary is the place to be.

Living in Calgary with a Family

Growing up in Calgary, I did not appreciate the quality and number of truly world-class places that we have on offer. As a kid, it was just a normal outing to visit our world-class Zoo, or go on a trip to Heritage Park for old-timey fair rides, fresh gingerbread at the bakery, and flattening pennies underneath the vintage steam train. Skiing at Canada Olympic Park, finding one of the many epic toboggan hills, or meeting friends to skate on one of the dozens of outdoor rinks filled our winters. We would make a full day trip by heading to Calaway Park for thrilling games and rides (now more than enough to give me nausea!), or explore and learn (without even knowing it!) at the Science center or Glenbow Museum.

If you are looking for quality family time, there is always loads to see and do. Here are just a few of our favourite activities in town:

  • Telus Spark: Amazing family-friendly science playground! All hands-on learning for all ages.
  • Heritage Park: Step back in time to a 19th-century Western town, with rides, farm, train, period homes, shops, and costumes to explore.
  • Glenbow Museum: With natural history displays and regular new art exhibitions, always an enlightening visit.
  • Rafting down the Bow: An astounding summer activity! Bring your inflatable boats/rafts, and spend hours splashing in the sun while you drift down serene water. Remember your life jackets – and raft rentals from the University are cheapest!
  • Calaway Park: A permanent fairground, perfect for kids of all ages. With rides, games, and delightful carnival food, your kids will go crazy for it!
  • Calgary Zoo: From the stunning ZooLights in winter to the Dinosaur park, this place has 30 hectares of exhibits to explore and learn.
