Modern construction and design sits alongside classic architecture and historical sites. Investments and development have made this area attractive for living.  New construction is still improving the area, meaning that homes in Downtown East Village will continue to rise in value and appeal. For a small community that once was largely ignored by the city of Calgary, this neighbourhood is springing back in a big way.

Downtown East Village Condos For Sale

The Downtown East Village, or most commonly known as the East Village, is a section of Calgary’s core that went largely untouched for decades. It was originally the home of Calgary’s oldest settlements, the very site where Fort Calgary was established before the city itself grew around it. But in the past few years, the city of Calgary made a plan to revitalize the area with new construction, better amenities, and excellent access in and out of the area. The community of Downtown East Village now stretches from 9th Ave to the Bow River, and from Fort Calgary to 3rd St SE and the Calgary Municipal Building.

This area is attracting more and more people to live. Currently, around 2700 people choose to live in Downtown East Village. It doesn’t yet have as many dwellings as the Commercial Core, but with 1100 apartments in the area to choose from, that number is growing. The population here is significantly older than Calgary’s standard, and they earn lower than the citywide average. One-third of the neighbourhood is made up of first-generation Canadians, many of them of Asian descent due to its proximity to the Chinatown community. There are very few families living here. Most of the residents are singles or couples with no kids.

The East Village Community Association was set up as soon as people were attracted back to the area. It’s initiative is to continue the work started by the city of Calgary to improve the community. They do this by holding community events like a street fair, a community garden, block parties, and they also offer a history book to see the way Downtown East Village used to be.

Downtown East Village Amenities

It used to be that the best part of Downtown East Village was in its past, but that has significantly changed in the past 15 years. Now, it has become a destination to visit due to all the improvements and amenities in the area. For the residents, it’s a perfect place to live. The majority of them choose not to drive but rather own bicycles, walk, or take public transit. The C-Train stops at City Hall and takes commuters anywhere in the city with ease. Transportation is also easy with the Car2Go system that allows residents with an account to borrow a car and drive it to where they need to go.

East Village now has some of Calgary’s most innovative buildings, including the Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. It’s a popular building to visit with several collections, opportunities to learn, exhibitions to view, and a walkway that passes high over the road. Fort Calgary is another site with significance to the city. It’s the historic location of Calgary’s first outpost, the remnant of Calgary’s foundation. The community is also fortunate to have the Central Library within its reach.

After the floods of 2013 devastated the area, there have been massive efforts to rebuild the community and offer better amenities. This includes the newly-opened St. Patrick's Island Park, a park in the middle of the Bow River open for tourists to visit. It has 31 hectares of public space with an amphitheatre, biking trails, a play area, and a small hill for tobogganing. Another popular feature is the RiverWalk, a pathway designed for cyclists to connect the Downtown East Village with the rest of downtown. It’s a safe and beautiful way to transit from one side of the city to the next without facing traffic or competing with pedestrians.

Downtown East Village Schools

There are few schools in the area, but most options are very close to the Downtown East Village neighbourhood. Western Canada High School is probably one of the best high schools in the area, a senior high with an excellent reputation and good rankings. There’s also Langevin School, Stanley Jones School and Crescent Heights High School. Both high schools have great rankings and offer significantly better education options than many other neighbourhoods.
