The community of Winston Heights – Mountview has a historic past that can still be seen in some of the architecture of the houses here. They are a throwback to the older Calgary when Winston Heights – Mountview was not an inner city northeast community, but rather a suburb far from the core. That has changed now. Winston Heights – Mountview is bounded by Deerfoot Trail, the Trans-Canada Highway, Edmonton Trail and 32nd Ave NE.
The 3800 residents that call Winston Heights – Mountview their home live in single-family homes for the most part. That has changed in the past few years as attached townhouses and duplexes replaced the older houses. This allows first time home buyers to get in on the real estate in Winston Heights – Mountview. The community is pretty content and comfortable. Their income reflects a slight decrease from the Calgary norm, although that is also a reflection of the less educated people that live here. 18% of the community don’t have a high school diploma. 19% of the neighbourhood are immigrants. Edmonton Trail is also an easy access point for the downtown area, dumping commuters into the East Village within a few minutes’ drive.
The neighbourhood is dominated by the Fox Hollow Golf Course, a private course that offers players a real challenge in the middle of the city. The course extends guest playing privileges to anybody making a booking. The Stew Hendry and Henry Viney Arenas are public ice rinks, skating and hockey opportunities for residents year-round. Sunridge Mall is located just across the Deerfoot Trail, a mall with many ethnic foods and stores as well as normal shopping and retail options. To the north of this neighbourhood is an industrial area, although many professional services and doctor clinics have also established themselves in the district.
The community has a number of walking and biking trails along the valley beside Deerfoot Trail that offer exceptional paths during the summer and winter. Bikers, walkers, and cross country skiers all use these pathways which go for kilometres in either direction. Bottomsland Park is along this regional pathway system, playground, picnic, and natural reserve area. This trail takes residents into Telus Spark and Calgary Zoo, both major attractions for the city.
Winston Heights – Mountview homes are situated in an ideal district for schooling. Mount View School is an elementary school with Kindergarten through to Grade 6 classes. Their small school ranks 406th in the province. Colonel Macleod School has a Grade 5-9 program that has a fairly large enrolment for the area. Georges P. Vanier Junior High offers a French Immersion program that not many schools in this district have offered, including an late start immersion program. The nearest districted high school is Crescent Heights High School. It offers a top 100 ranking school with a great athletics program.
