Sitting on both sides of Crowchild Trail is the community of West Hillhurst. A large chunk of the community sits alongside the northern banks of the Bow River. The community has the other boundary lines of 18th to 28th St NW and the escarpment to the north. St Andrews Heights, Hounsfield Heights - Briar Hill, and Parkdale all are similar neighbouring communities that share the same demographics and lifestyle.
The community is like this. It’s fairly extensive with over 6000 residents living here. That number is up several hundred from the last census taken, a sign that the community is strong and vibrant. The median income is a healthy range, higher than the average Calgarian. 17% of the community are first-generation Canadians that have migrated from many different countries and cultures. Over three-quarters of the population here value higher education and hold degrees and diplomas from university or college. Over half of the housing options here are single-family homes, with the remainder made up by duplexes, apartments, and townhomes, in that order. West Hillhurst has a number of amenities that it offers those who live here. The proximity to the University of Calgary is a major draw for students. Over 30,000 students are enrolled every year, attending classes on a campus that’s larger in size than the entire downtown district. The university has classes that bring in international students. Their buildings also serve the public in many ways. The Olympic Oval is a full-size speed skating rink that athletes from around the world attend to train at. The McMahon Stadium is the home to the Calgary Stampeders.
The community can easily access the downtown area. Memorial Drive, Crowchild Trail, and Bow Trail all offer easy entry points into the core district. This area brings in thousands of people every day for work or shopping or tourism. There is also a very established public transportation system in West Hillhurst. The closest station is Banff Trail or Sunnyside, both not far at all.
Close by this community is the Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children’s Hospital. These hospitals draw in patients from all over Southern Alberta with their state-of-the-art facilities and world-class health professionals. The Children’s Hospital has over 34 fields of medicine and 150 full-time researchers. It even has its own school attached to serve the sick children who wouldn’t be able to attend normal classes. Just over the river is the Shaganappi Point Golf Course, a large 18-hole course that challenges and entertains golfers in this public space.

West Hillhurst does have a few schools in the area that have great reputations. West Hillhurst is also in the district of many surrounding schools Madeleine d’Houet School is a Catholic bilingual junior high with distinction in the academic courses it offers. The Louise Dean Centre is a high school with a unique student body. The school is aimed at parenting and expecting teens that would normally have no alternative but to drop out of normal classes. Queen Elizabeth School and Queen Elizabeth High School are next door in Hillhurst. Hillhurst School is a reputable elementary with good rankings in the province.
