The community of Vista Heights is located in the northeast sector of Calgary, along the Deerfoot Trail and close to the northwest communities of Winston Heights and Mountview. The community was first established back in the 1960s and was built up in the 60s and 70s. It lies in the southern corridor for the air traffic but is rarely bothered by it. The community of Vista Heights can tell us a lot by looking at the census data provided by the Calgary council. This is not a large population at all, with just over 2200 residents in this area. But that gives us a closer look at who lives here. The population is made up of one-quarter immigrants, a statistic we see in just about every community across the city. That population chooses to live in single-family homes but also townhouses as well. These two options are even splits for the choices for housing here. There are a handful of apartments and a few duplexes to be found as well. The community is typically young, with families here with younger children, although there is a significant amount of older families as well. The community tends to earn slightly less than the average and its education levels among the community are lower as well. Many of the inhabitants here are empployed and have steady careers, unemployment being very low in the area. The community has slightly less than half of their population living here for 5 years or more, allowing the opportunity for new homes to be listed all the time.
The Vista Heights community is part of the Crossroads Community Association which actually covers Belfast, Mayland Heights and Vista Heights in the one organisation. These older communities have much in common and share identical traits. The assocation works throughout all three communities to provide a number of services and oversee the maintenance of the communities. Vista Heights residents also have a voice for the city council, presented in part by the work of the community association.
The attraction to living in Vista Heights has to be the accessibility. For those living here, the possibility of living alongside both the Trans-Canada Highway as well as the Deerfoot Trail offers multiple avenues of travel. For those who commute into work or school, this an ideal place to live. In fact, there is a high student population here attending either SAIT or the University of Calgary who choose to live here for its amenable distance to either school.
The community does have not one but two golf course surrounding the neighbourhood. The Fox Hollow Golf Course and the McCall Lake Golf Course are two of Calgary’s finest golf courses within the city limits. These courses are well-maintained, very adequately laid out, and provide even the most experienced golfer a chance to try their game out. There are also quite a few parks in the area that residents can use. Many of the residents also like to use the trails along the Bow River and beside Deerfoot Trail for biking, walking, and running. Residents can use this to access places like the Calgary Zoo or Telus Spark very easily.
For the parents living here, schooling is of great importance. The best options nearby are Vista Heights School, Mayland Heights School, Belfast School. Mount View School, or Georges P Vanier School. These schools, none of them very far, allow parents to have peace about the schools’ reputation and significance. The Mount View School is ranked by the Fraser Institute as 406th in the province for its academic results. Nearby high schools include Lester B Pearson or James Fowler High School. Delta West Academy is one of the finest and most prestigious private schools in Calgary, often topping the ranking system of the Fraser Institute.
