In the community of Varsity, you’ll find a beautiful neighbourhood replete with house, apartments, and duplexes. This large community houses over 12,000 residents, second only to Edgemont in size and population. Varsity homes are primarily single-family homes, with apartments making up the second-most popular dwelling choice. The residents here have a comfortable income, on par with what the rest of Calgary earns. 9 out of 10 residents have a high school diploma and 70% of them have tertiary education degrees. The average family is older with children who’ve left home. The median age supports that statistic, the residents here being, on average, 6 years older than the rest of Calgary.
The community sits alongside the Bow River to the Southwest, with the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club making up the western edge of the neighbourhood. The triangle border is completed by Crowchild Trail NW and 32nd Ave NW. Two C-Train stations serve the vast Varsity population, Brentwood and Dalhousie stations. They help shuttle commuters into the downtown core in less than 20 minutes every day.
The Varsity Community Association is led by a volunteer board that plans, organizes, and arranges many events throughout the year. They host a yearly Stampede Breakfast, organize sports teams, and facilitate various programs within the community centre.
Varsity, with its enormous size, has many amenities within and surrounding the community. Not the least of which is Market Mall, a large shopping mall with dozens of retailers and restaurants. The mall offers many options and brings in thousands of residents from all over the city. The Silver Springs Golf and Country Club is primarily housed in Varsity. The golf club is an exclusive course for members that rival many other Calgary courses. The exquisite fairways and greens challenge the best golfer time and again.
Varsity’s river access allows residents to use the expansive pathway system along the Bow. The pathways allow walkers, runners, and bikers to travel many kilometres along the river’s shores, all the way into to downtown Calgary and beyond. Several other smaller green spaces dot the neighbourhood, with ball diamonds, soccer fields and off-leash areas for residents to utilise. Shouldice Aquatic Centre is just south of the community, a large centre with a 25-metre lap pool, a dive pool, and diving boards.
The University of Calgary’s campus also borders Varsity, a campus that educates over 30,000 students every year. The campus is extensive, covering more square feet than the downtown Calgary core. Many buildings in this campus are used by Varsity occupants such as the Olympic Oval, MacEwan Hall, and MacMahon Stadium. These are prime Calgary venues that are visited by people from all corners of the city. Varsity residents have them on their back door.
Within Varsity, several great schools offer competitive educational programs to the residents here. F.E. Osborne Junior High School, Marion Carson Elementary, Varsity Acres Bilingual Elementary, and St Vincent de Paul School, which has Kindergarten through to Grade 9. These schools are rated very well by the Calgary school board and Catholic school board. High school students can attend William Aberhart High School or Bowness High School, both very reputable choices with a range of academic programs.
Marion Carson is an exceptional school, ranking 41st in the entire province, excelling in student to teacher ratios and various programs for the students to choose from. According to the Fraser Institute, Varsity Acres School ranks 128th in the province, a respectable score considering the number of students in the school.
