The community of Valley Ridge has been only recently a part of Calgary’s communities. It sits in Calgary’s northwest quadrant on the western edge of the neighbourhood here. As for the homes, there are several options like the stately houses set on large pieces of land. There are also modern condos in the neighbourhood, allowing active singles and those who want to downsize to find a home here. The community is bounded by the Trans-Canada Highway, the Stoney Trail Ring Road, and the Bow River. The natural boundary out to west feels less defined and more subtly blended in with nature.
The community is made up of 5500 people, a population that prefers to live in large homes. Over 90% of the people choose to live in single-family housing. The only other option are the townhomes that suit singles or couples looking to downsize their housing. The community has an immigration rate of just 17%, very low for the Calgary standard found here. The median income is almost double that of the rest of Calgary, a common statistic found in western communities. The affluent, upscale neighbourhoods can usually be found on this section of the map. Astonishingly, the community has three-quarters of the population holding a post-secondary degree, making a neighbourhood that highly values the education of its people. Two-thirds of the community have lived here for over 5 years. This is the sort of community that people choose when they want to settled won and refrain from moving elsewhere. There are opportunities to get into the neighbourhood, but they don’t come as often as other areas.
The Valley Ridge Community Association uses volunteers to run every facet of the organization. They offer sports games, youth teams, free classes, facility hall rentals, and many community-wide events. These serve to build better bonds between the neighbours living here. That makes for an exciting part of the community and a key feature for why people choose to live in Valley Ridge.
There are so many options for residents living here. The first obvious choice is the golf course. Valley Ridge Golf Course is a fairly new course. It was once the site for popular camping grounds for Calgarians along the Bow River. When that closed down, the golf course took over the prime real estate and founded a premium course that has exquisite grounds. The community loves to use the River as a boating and fishing site. Floating downriver is always a popular summer activity. The residents can get great park access in Bowness Park, just a few minutes away. The park has picnic tables, fire pits, and skating during the winter months.
Travel is incredible easy, making this isolated community feel connected with the rest of the city. The Trans-Canada Highway and Stoney Trail connect this neighbourhood to the rest of the city with ease. When the Stoney Trail ring road is due to be complete in 2021, it will provide complete access to every part of the city. There is also great access to the public transit system of Calgary which does operate as far out as Valley Ridge.
There are few options within the neighbourhood, but students have great schools nearby that they can use. The districts of several reputable schools extend into Valley Ridge. Bowness is home to several of these options. They include Belvedere Parkway School, Bowness High School, Bowcroft School, and Our Lady of The Assumption School. Bowness High School has a reputation for great athletics, competing well against other city schools and in the province. Our Lady of the Assumption offers K-9 education in the Catholic school system. It’s a faith-based alternative to the public schools that surround it.
