University Heights Houses For Sale

University Heights sits directly beside the University of Calgary. This sprawling 200-hectare campus is very large, a bigger footprint than the downtown core of Calgary. This allows many of the residents to attend school and live in a residential neighbourhood nearby. The community is bordered to the south by the Trans-Canada Highway and to the west by Crowchild Trail NW.

Within the community, the mixture of permanent residents and temporary students skew the average statistics put out by the city of Calgary.   Over 3000 inhabitants call University Heights their home, whether it’s a long-term home or just for a semester. At any time, 30% of the inhabitants live in single-family homes, and almost 2-thirds live in the apartments found on just about every street. Many of the residents are young, the average age being just 31 compared to the Calgary average of 36. University Heights residents make a lower income than the standard, but again, that’s a representation of the large student body that live in this community.

The University Heights Community Association is staffed and run by the permanent residents of this community, offering community sporting games, barbeques, Stampede breakfasts, and many other unique community events throughout the year. A monthly newsletter keeps all the residents informed about their own community.

University Heights Amenities 

The University Heights residents are spoiled by their prime location. On either side of the community are two Calgary’s largest and most prestigious medical centres, the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and the Foothills Medical Centre.  These hospitals employ hundreds of staff and serve thousands of patients across dozens of clinics and branches of medicine.

The University of Calgary’s campus is directly north of the community. University Heights residents have direct access to 11 major buildings on the U of C campus, a school that has over 30,000 students enrolled each year. These buildings include MacEwan Hall, a performance hall that seats several hundred people for major musicians touring through Calgary.

Next to the neighbourhood is MacMahon Stadium, a football venue that is home to the Calgary Stampeders and the University of Calgary Dinos. This is a popular venue for Calgary and was used as the staging area for Calgary volunteers after the flood of 2013 hit the city. The Trans-Canada Highway, Crowchild Trail, and the University Transit station allow residents to move quickly and efficiently where they need to go. The downtown core is 15 minutes by the C-Train, while residents can get to the airport in less than 30 minutes.

University Heights Schools

There are relatively few schools, reflecting the nature of the population and demographics of the neighbourhood. There is the Dr Gordon Townsend School, which is attached to the Children’s Hospital. It serves the children that are constantly checking in and out of the medical centre due to major health issues that would otherwise prevent them from attending a normal school. The University Elementary School educates kids from Kindergarten to Grade 6. There is also a Westmount Charter Mid-High School, enrolling students from Grades 5- 12. This premier charter school is a prestigious academy that has a reputation of producing academic excellence. Outside of the community of University Heights, there is also the William Aberhart High School in Banff Trail and Westmount Charter Elementary in Parkdale.

William Aberhart High School has an incredible ranking of 31st in the province, outstanding in the public school setting. This school has excellent programs and an international program to welcome overseas students to study in Calgary and learn from this culture.
