The community of Sunnyside exists along the northern edge of the Bow River and follows the path of the bend as it curves around the city central district. The community directly borders the city although it does not feel like an inner city community. The neighbourhood is bordered by the river on one side and McHugh Bluffs on the other. From 10th to Centre St is the boundary line on either side, neighbouring both Hillhurst and Crescent Heights.
The people of Sunnyside are multicultural and diverse. There are almost 4000 people currently living in Sunnyside, a number that has dramatically increased in the past 3 years. This is a testament to the resolve of the community to stay strong and grow despite hardships and setbacks. The community is 16% immigrants, many of them coming from Spanish and Chinese backgrounds. The majority of the population here have some degree. They have an astounding 97% rate of the residents holding at least a diploma. This is among the highest percentage of educated residents in the city. Many of the population work in the downtown but would rather choose to live outside in a residential community. The average income is lower than Calgary’s standard, and the age is younger as well. Most homes are apartments, better suited to the lifestyle of the people living here. The community does have an assortment of homes, ranging from affordable older style houses to newer developments that were built after the flood devastated the community. The architecture down any street is a mixture of older designs and newer styles side by side.
The Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association has worked hard to create and preserve a feeling of neighbourly attention and care. This is no more evident than in how quickly the community rebounded and rebuilt after many were evacuated from their neighbourhood.
Sunnyside has a lot going for it. When residents cross the newly built Peace Bridge, they enter the downtown area. From here, they can wander along the RiverWalk paths, a new initiative that allows bikers and walkers to share the trails without any incidents. This trail travels all the way along the city downtown core, including past Prince’s Island Park. This park is a favourite destination for many Sunnyside residents. It’s large, peaceful, and offers a number of activities and events throughout the year.
The C-Train passes right through the community on the Sunnyside stop. It’s a clean and efficient way to travel. This is why a significant portion of the community chooses to walk and bike and take public transportation over operating their own vehicle. The Calgary Transit system shuttles 100 million passengers every year across the 118 kms of track throughout the city. Memorial Drive allows residents to access Deerfoot Trail in minutes, a gateway to the rest of the city.
McHugh Bluffs on the north side of the community have one of the most perfect vantage points of the city skyline and many photographers travel here to find this viewpoint. For shopping, many love to walk over to Eau Claire for local businesses and eclectic, trendy shops. The community also has close access to SAIT, a technical school that has existed in Calgary since the 1920s. Trendy shopping is a feature of the Kensington district, a favourite of the rest of Calgary.
Sunnyside has a few schools that appeal to the parents and students of this neighbourhood. Sunnyside School is a small K-6 elementary school that has a focus on good teacher-student ratios. This is shown in its ranking, 34th in the whole province. Crescent Heights High School has an equally good standing in the education community. It ranks 99th in the province and has strong athletics programs and fine arts courses. Rosedale School and Queen Elizabeth High School are also located nearby in Hillhurst.
