Sue Higgins Park
Sue Higgins Park was formerly called Southland Park. It lies along the Bow River's west bank as it flows through the city's southeast corner. The park consists of an island, riverbanks, flood plain and inland marshes.
In 1992, citizens formed a group to promote the park's establishment and rehabilitate the area to a natural state. A couple of years later, the government established the park in 1994.

What is there to do at Sue Higgins Park?
Sue Higgins Park allows Calgarians to experience nature in the city. Countless trees like Balsam Poplar with a smaller number of Trembling Aspen are on the island and along the riverbank.
The Bow River's fast-flowing waters provide habitat for diving ducks, while the channels provide waters suitable for dabblers. The river is also often populated by large numbers of Canada Geese and several gull species. Inland, you can find native sparrows in the grasslands, and the marshes are full of blackbirds and shorebirds. The introduced Eastern Grey Squirrel is frequently present in the forest canopy.
For you biking lovers, M-D-W Mobile Bike Repair Services is seen in this area occasionally.
There are four different access points to the Bow River for water babies. For waders, there are shallow calm water areas. Two points are accessing deep water with a strong current for dock dogs.
The park's most prominent features are the training ring and Nora Tuckey's Grove. These are fenced, quiet areas perfect for training. Nora Tuckey's Grove has picnic tables, and families or groups of dog lovers can use it for activities.
There's also a path that parallels the river. The scenery is sublime through four seasons, and the river's sound is peaceful.
Les Deux Chiens Assis, a pair of bronze sculptures crafted in the late 1800s by Parisian artist Henri Alfred Jacquemart, are beautiful recent additions to the park.
How big is Sue Higgins Park?
The park has a total area of 62 hectares. It is known as the mother of all dog parks because it is the largest fully fenced Sue Higgins Off-Leash Area in the city.
Almost anything a dog or guardian could want is here. There are weave poles and moguls for playing and training, open fields for unlimited fetch. Shady trees, open sun, quiet, seldom-used spots and busy, populated areas for seeking animated play partners are also available.
