The community of Southview is located in Calgary’s southeast, almost directly across from the city’s downtown core. Many of the houses here have been standing in this community for decades, ever since Southview was introduced to Calgary back in 1950. But because of its position, we see a lot of recent development that has revitalised the community, modernising the neighbourhood to include several architectural masterpieces, contemporary homes that better suit the location. Southview boundaries include 17th Ave SE, 26th Ave SE, 36th St SE and the Bow River.
The community doesn’t have a large population, but even in it’s small size, we can use the statistics to find out who would be attracted to living here. The community has 1,800 residents, living in single-family homes predominantly. There’s only a smattering of other options, but there are some apartments, townhomes, and duplexes to be found here. The community is more established and mature than many other Calgarian neighbourhoods. The average age is several years older with family sizes also showing that as well. The older children or households with kids who’ve left home are more common here than anywhere else. Around 25% of the population have arrived in Canada within their lifetimes, first-generation Canadians representing several backgrounds and nationalities. Despite its size, the Southview Community Association is busy and active in the lives of the residents here. They help coordinate several initiatives that keep people connected. The community has many events and works with the city of Calgary to plan bigger events throughout the year.
For those living here, access is the number one factor for choosing Southview. The community itself straddles Deerfoot Trail, so right away the value of living here is higher because of this major road. Residents can travel up and down the road to get all around Calgary. The 17th Ave construction will create a new bus-only lane that will further connect the community and the downtown core. As for now, residents use Memorial Dr to get into the core for work and entertainment.
The Bow River offers several pathways even extending into the downtown area, for Southview residents to use. You’ll find people walking along these paths every day, biking, jogging, and enjoying the view of the city skyline. Beyond that, we find Inglewood Golf Course is highly regarded by locals, a good course that is both close and challenging, a good combination for golfers living here. Inglewood Wildlands offers a place to walk your dog as well as play a pickup game of football in the summer.
Or shopping, the neighbouring community of Inglewood or Forest Lawn both have thriving centres for hopping, unique stores that offer anything and everything a resident could need. The shopping is also easy at Marlborough Mall, just a couple minutes away for major brands and retail stores.
For the discerning parents, the schools here offer several options. The closest schools in Southview are Holy Cross Elementary, Valley View School, West Dover School, and Colonel Walker School. Colonel Walker is regarded as being ranked 425th in the province for elementary schools, classes going from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Other schools for older children include Forest Lawn High School, Father Lacombe High School, or even Western Canada High School on 17th Ave in the city.
