Signal Hill Neighbourhood Information

Signal Hill is a community in Calgary’s southwest. It sits on the western border of Calgary and has a secluded feel up on top of a historical site of real significance to the city. Battalion Park is the location of large white numbers made up of thousands of stones. These stones were once put in place by soldiers training for the First World War. They now stand as a symbol to tribute those who sacrificed their lives in that war. The community is bordered by Highway 8, Sarcee Trail, 69th St, and 17th Ave. It is an amalgamation of several smaller communities including Signal Ridge and Sienna Hills.

The neighbourhood statistics tell a lot about the nature of the people who choose to live here. This large community has 13,700 residents living here, the largest in Calgary’s west and one of the largest in the whole city. The neighbourhood is made up of 32% immigrants, also one of the higher proportions in the city. Everyone is made to feel welcoming in Signal Hill. The predominant choice for housing here is the single-family home. It’s a high percentage at 78% of the available options in the community. Smaller homes and larger homes are in that number. Apartments and townhomes make up the reminder, good starting options for the first time home buyer. The average wage reflects the types of housing available, with an income that’s 25% higher than Calgary’s median wage. The average age here is also very established, at least 8 years older than a normal Calgarian would be. 88% of the population choose to get great education, receiving degrees and diplomas for their efforts. The numbers of people that live here tell another story. Over 70% of the population in this neighbourhood have lived here for over 5 years. The temptation to move away is very minimal once buying a house here.  

The Signal Hill Community Association has a big job to care for the 13,000 residents living here. This volunteer organization plans and initiates several events, large scale operations that help bring this community together. These include fundraising events, charity walks, family fun activities, classes and care for young children, and community-wide clean-up days.

Signal Hill Amenities

The people of Signal Hill have a lot to choose from when living here. This community has incredible access to the rest of Calgary. The northern border of 17th Ave actually provides a dual functions, serving as a great access point into the city as well as several shopping and lifestyle options the line the street further into the downtown core. Sarcee Trail also connects this neighbourhood with the rest of the city while Highway 8 takes inhabitants towards the mountains with ease.

Shopping is very convenient in Signal Hill with the Westhills Shopping Centre located at the base of Battalion Park. This area has dozens of stores, restaurants, professional services, and entertainment options for everyone who visits here. Optimist Athletic Park is located right next door, a popular location for sports as they have 3 large fields, 8 ball diamonds, and large open spaces for practices and training.

Signal Hill Schools

There are a few schools located in and around the neighbourhood. They include Battalion Park School, an elementary with several hundred students attending every year. Ernest Manning High School is very close. This school is currently ranked 30th in the province and excels at offering different programs like fine arts, athletics, and advanced academic classes. Other schools include Griffith Woods School, Menno Simmons Christian School, and Rundle College. Rundle is an elementary school with a ranking in the top ten schools in the entire province.
