The neighbourhood of Rundle is in Calgary’s northeast, a part of the first communities established in the area. It was established in 1973 and the community was built up around that time. Land was taken back from the industrial sections of Calgary and redesignated to become residential neighbourhoods. The community worked out well and homes here were built up in the 70s and 80s to become what it is today. The borders of the neighbourhood are the Trans-Canada Highway, 52nd St NE, 32nd Ave NE, and 36th St NE.
The community of Rundle has over 11,500 residents, making a significant chunk of the northeast found right here. The population can tell us a lot about who loves here and who would find Rundle a perfect home. The community is made up of over 40% immigrant background. This proportion is higher than we’d expect to find in Calgary communities but fairly normal here. The population chooses for their housing to live in the single-family home, but that is also not the majority. The other options include duplexes and townhomes with quite a few suites as well found here, a much higher proportion than elsewhere in Calgary. The people here tend to make less, on average, than their Calgarian counterparts. This also works alongside with the lower education levels and decreased degree and certificate holders. We see that people love to live in Rundle, with a majority living her long term. Over 60% of the community has a 5-year history of living in Rundle, many for longer. The community attracts all ages, all types, all family sizes. A household here could contain a large family, a small growing family, a couple, a retired single or a young professional.
The Rundle Community Association is behind all the activities and classes and programs run here. They are public about their desire to create community in this neighbourhood, finding ways to unite people together in a bond. The reason people have a fierce pride about living here is because they have an association that tirelessly finds ways to make people love where they live.
Rundle has a number of exciting opportunities when living here. Many different people love the accessibility that this community offers. Both the Trans-Canada Highway and 52nd St offer good road routes around where people need to go. The neighbourhood has several people living here that commute regularly into and out of the city. It’s not hard when living here.
The Sunridge Mall and commercial area surrounding it is a major part of life here. Many residents find this mall to be a source for retail, restaurants, professional services, and much more. The neighbourhood is perfectly placed alongside the shopping district in the northeast, but doesn’t feel too commercial or busy. There is enough separation between the two.
The people of Rundle use their neighbourhood as the source of their recreation. The trails and paths along the streets offer good walking opportunities and biking throughout the summer. Alternatively, people use the Silverwing Links Golf Course of the McCall Golf Course to get some exercise and fresh air. These courses give the golfer a good day on the course, challenges and fun at every hole.
The schools here are Rundle School, Cecil Swanson School, St Rupert School, Dr Gordon Higgins School, and St Rose of Lima Junior High School. These schools are up to the task of meeting every child’s needs, no matter what they might be. The nearest high schools are Lester B Pearson High School, Father Lacombe High School, and to an extent, the Nelson Mandela High School in the further northeast. Pearson High School is well regarded throughout the city for its academic, fine arts and athletics programs.
