The Town of Chestermere

Chestermere, originally called Chestermere Lake, is a city in the Canadian province of Alberta, located within Rocky View County. Primarily a commuter town for Calgary, it is also a member municipality of the Calgary Region. Surrounding Chestermere Lake, the city was officially known as Chestermere Lake from 1977 to 1993. Before the 20th century, the area around what is now Chestermere Lake was home to only a small number of farmers. With the establishment of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, more settlers arrived in the west. Seeking ways to improve farming efficiency, they explored irrigation methods. As a natural wetland, Chestermere Lake was identified as an ideal balancing pool for the Western Irrigation Block. By 1907, a dam and canal system had been constructed, transforming the wetland into a lake, allowing farmers to use its water for irrigation. After the irrigation system was developed, the lake began to serve recreational purposes. People started leasing land from the Western Irrigation District (WID), which had taken over the land from CPR in 1944, and built cabins to enjoy summer stays by the water. In 1959, the Chestermere Cabin Owners Association (CCOA) was formed with around 50 members. The association organized events, purchased a fire truck for the community, worked to reduce lake pollution, planted trees, and helped bring electricity and natural gas to the cabins. As the number of people living around Chestermere Lake grew, residents sought long-term land leases. In 1975, the CCOA purchased the land from the WID and later transferred ownership to the residents. By 1977, the lake was home to 120 permanent residences and was officially designated as the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake on April 1, 1977. This new status granted residents greater political influence, enabling the addition of services and amenities, as well as the development of fire protection services, improved roads, a community hall, street lighting, a recreation center, local businesses, and a golf course. By 1992, Chestermere’s population had risen to 1,043 permanent residents. On March 1, 1993, the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake officially changed its status and name to the Town of Chestermere. This transition provided residents with increased local and political authority. The town continued expanding its services and amenities, reaching a population of 17,203 according to its 2014 municipal census. In late 2014, the town council voted in favor of pursuing city status, which was officially granted on January 1, 2015.
