The community of Wildwood is situated in Calgary’s southwest, right on the border of the north-south line of the Bow River. It sits on the southern edge of the Bow directly west of the city centre. The community has existed first as a community with small bungalow homes set on big plots of land. It’s still evident to see that character and history, although Wildwood is changing. The community now has a renewed vigour as developers begin to update and upgrade the older homes into a newer, modern designs that fit the culture and demand of today’s consumers. The community is bordered by Bow Trail, the Bow River, Sarcee Trail, and 38th St SW.
The people here are unique in what they prefer and value in a community. Just over 2700 people live here in this neighbourhood. The small population doesn’t reflect the large size. Almost 98% of the housing options here are limited to a single-family home. First time buyers can still enter the market with the smaller, moderately-priced bungalow that still dot the landscape of this community. The average income is higher than Calgary’s median by almost 50%, a significantly higher amount that can’t be ignored. We see that people here value education with over 70% of people with a post-secondary degree or certificate from their efforts.
The community is predominantly older than Calgary standards, residents here aging out the normal Calgarian by as much as 8-10 years. Only 17% of the community identifies as a first-generation Canadian, this is lower than what is seen in other parts of Calgary. Three-quarters of the population has lived here long-term. They have residing in Wildwood for over 5 years and don’t intend on moving any time soon.
The Wildwood Community Association has a lot to do with how appealing this neighbourhood is. The association is a volunteer-led initiative to drive people together and unite the people living here. They offer fun days in the park, barbecues, free garage sale events, and community-wide programs that involve everyone.

The people of Wildwood have a lot that they can use on a daily basis. There are several options for the average resident here. The main feature of living in Wildwood is Edworthy Park. This park is a massive urban park, 169 hectares right in the heart of the city. It also includes the famous Lawrey Gardens, a public garden located by the river’s edge. It includes fire pits, picnics, playgrounds, sports fields, benches, trails, and shelters for families to use. Summer or winter, this park is always teeming with families enjoying the outdoors. Right beside is the Edworthy Off Leash Dog Park that serves the pet lovers in the community. A couple of pedestrian bridges allow residents to cross over to access the pathways on the other side of the river. These paths extend all the way into the downtown area, perfect for bikers and walkers to safely coexist on these trails.
The community of Wildwood has a very good system of transportation. The Bow Trail route is soon to be expanded into a 6-lane express that conveniently travels right next to the neighbourhood. It can take residents into the core easily and quickly. Public transportation runs efficiently through this neighbourhood, catering to those commuters who prefer to travel on the efficient Calgary transit system. The people of Wildwood do their shopping at Westbrook Mall or in some of the little stores around the community. This serves every basic need and is always on hand for anything a resident could want.
