Homes For Sale in Sunalta
The name of the community of Sunalta came from a competition held where a young girl suggested a portmanteau of Sunny Alberta. Thus was born Sunalta, a name which stuck and has remained to this day. The community shares much of its real estate with business and offices, large towers and skyscrapers making this area feel very commercial. But there are are several homes in these towers, apartments for people needing to be as close to the downtown core as possible. The community is bounded by the Bow River on the north, Scarboro Ave to the south, and 24th to 14th St SW on either side. This area does contain a large industrial portion and the home of the old CPR headquarters.
The community of Sunalta has over 3000 people living in this area, densely populated although it does not feel that way. It feels more quirky and trendy with many art stores, speciality shops, and diverse cuisines reflecting the people living here. One-quarter of the population are immigrants, cultures from all backgrounds and nations represented here in force. The average wage is slightly lower than Calgary’s average, but the education levels are fairly high. Only 5% of the community does not have a degree or diploma of any kind. The vast majority of the population live in apartment blocks, amix of high-rise towers and low-rise apartment buildings. There are a smattering of homes spread throughout the area, a throwback to the old homes that used to populate Sunalta when it was established in the 1900s. The majority of the demographics skew towards young, singles with few families living here as well. This neighbourhood has a high turnover rate, with over three quarters of the population having lived here for fewer than 5 years.
The Sunalta Community Association does its best to connect the people together and to focus on the residential feel of the community, not the commercial side. The association does this by holding classes and courses, programs and events. These initiatives make the community more connected to each other and represent a stronger voice to the rest of Calgary.
