Chinatown is not a large area, taking up just a few blocks of the downtown area. The community is defined by the borders of 4th Ave SW, MacLeod Trail, 2nd St SW and the Bow River. This small triangle of the city is densely populated in high-rise apartment buildings. There is no detached homes or townhouses for residents to choose. Of the 1800 dwellings here, 100% of them are apartments the most suitable option for downtown living.
The population of Chinatown is not diverse or multicultural as one might expect. It’s primarily made up of Asian-descent immigrants. Over 80% of the neighbourhood is first-generation Canadian, the majority speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, or another Chinese dialect. These residents live with family, tight groups of people living together in close proximity. There is a very high older population here, much older than the average Calgarian. The standard age in Chinatown is around 60 years old. The median income shows as lower than the city standard, but that’s primarily due to the high number of elderly residing here who have retired and no longer earn income.
Chinatown does have its own community association, meeting in Calgary’s Chinese Cultural Centre, a heritage attraction that serves to commemorate the Chinese community in Calgary and in Canada. The association does much to further the Chinese cause, offering many services aimed at first-generation Canadians settling down in Calgary. It also serves to promote the community to the greater city hosting events like the yearly Dragon Boat Race and Festival in North Glenmore Park.

Chinatown’s location is ideal for the community. Centred in Calgary’s downtown core, it has a range of amenities within the neighbourhood and in the central district. Dragon City Mall is a popular choice for many residents, offering speciality stores, Chinese eateries, beauty and health services, and much more. This is a local mall tailored to serve the local Chinese community. Beyond that, Eau Claire Market is also close by with unique retail and eating experiences.
The community sits alongside the Bow River with many pathways for walking and biking. The river passes along the Prince’s Island Park, a popular destination for many inner Calgary inhabitants. The park hosts a yearly Shakespeare by the Bow that brings in visitors from all over the city. Sien Lok Park is another park for residents to use. This inner city park has 5.8 acres of green area with a gazebo, benches, playgrounds, a tai chi area, and plenty of picnic spots under shady trees.
Chinatown is just a few blocks east of the city centre with the Core Shopping Centre and dozens of other eateries and retail stores to choose from. This also puts residents close to the C-Train stations that pass through the city. Chinatown residents can use the clean and affordable Calgary transit system to get anywhere in the city with ease. Because of the downtown limited parking, many residents choose not to drive but rather walk, bike, or take public transit to get where they need to go.
Schools near Chinatown Homes for Sale
Chinatown schools have a few options that serve the locals here along with several options outside of downtown. The Calgary Chinese Private School offers education for students within the Chinese population. The Chinese Language School is also located within the neighbourhood offering classes in Mandarin and Cantonese. Western Canada High School is just outside of the central business district on 17th Ave SW, a public high school with a good representation of the Asian community. Langevin School in Bridgeland-Riverside offers special needs students a chance to learn in a specialised school community.
Many Chinatown students choose Western Canada because of its excellent reputation. It consistently ranks in the top 20 schools of the province due to its academic program. It is one of the only schools in Calgary to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate Program for advanced student progression.
