Just outside of the city limits, to the West of Calgary, Bearspaw is located along Highway 1A and the Bow, many of the homes falling in that area. The community is sparse and spread out, taking advantage of the opportunity to create estates and acreages in this community. Much of the area is governed by Cochrane municipality and identifies closely with that township. This rural community is so spread out with large acreages that it’s difficult to exactly define the borders.
The community is mainly made up of large homes, big single-family detached homes on acreages. The area was once a popular destination for dairy farmers, but as the city of Calgary encroached on the land, the dairies gave way to the homes and acreages found there now. The community is currently under review for annexation in the next 10 years as Calgary continues its expansion out West. The homes would then come under the governing authority of Calgary but would remain a haven for space and privacy. The main reason residents move out to Bearspaw is the access to the amenities but the retention of privacy.
Although there isn’t a strong cohesion among the neighbourhood with clearly defined borders and governing principles, the area still has its unique services. There are schools, a community centre for residents to hire out, its own fire station and water. Wastewater is normally through private septic systems and is up to individual households.
Amenities near Bearspaw Real Estate
The residents do enjoy their community for all that it offers. The primary reason for living here is the access to incredible natural reserves. Big Hill Springs Provincial Park is just north of this community and has hiking trails and many opportunities to view the wildlife. Glenbow Ranch is a great opportunity to ride horses and experience a taste of the olden days that once defined Alberta. 12 Mile Coulee is located just inside the city limits and has trails, off-leash areas, and several pathway systems to bike and walk.
The community is just a few minutes away from excellent shopping within Calgary. Crowfoot Crossing is the closest and most accessible area, a centre with dozens of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options for residents to choose from. Highway 1A also extends out west and brings residents into the mountains in less than an hour. Cochrane is another centre for smaller shopping opportunities that don’t exist within Calgary.
Bearspaw Country Club is an exclusive golfing course that boasts excellent views on prestigious greens. Many residents hold memberships here as this course typifies the affluence and prestige that most people here can afford. The Bow River provides boating and fishing, some of the best spots in the entire province are right in this community. Anglers visit from all over the country to fish the Bow, known for its trout and challenging conditions.Â

Schools near Bearspaw Homes for Sale
While the proximity to the city does provide residents with several school options, Bearspaw does have its own school systems. The Bearspaw School is a Kindergarten through to Grade 8 centre for students to receive a top-notch education. Cochrane High School is one option for students, the zoned high school for Bearspaw. This school brings in students from all over the area, one of the largest high schools in Rocky View County. Within Calgary, there is the Robert Thirsk High School and Eric Harvie School. Robert Thirsk High School is one of the newest high schools in this part of the city. According to the Fraser Institute, Cochrane High School is a top 50 school, one of the best in the province.Â
