Sitting just north of Crowchild trail and perched on Calgary’s western point, Ranchlands has immediate access to the best of the mountain wilderness. In under an hour, Ranchlands residents can be in the midst of the foothills that they see from their backyards and kitchen windows. Ranchlands homes include around half single-family dwellings with a large townhouse percentage; 31% of the dwellings. New homeowners can live in this community in the several affordable apartments and duplexes as well.
Ranchlands sits on Crowchild trail, John Laurie Blvd, Sarcee Trail, and Nose Hill Drive. The community averages just under the median income of Calgary. Of its almost 8000 residents, over half hold a university or college degree, with almost two-thirds having some form of tertiary education. Nearly one-quarter of the residents are first-generation Canadians, immigrants from all over the world. Many of the people living in Ranchlands are young with new families or are considering starting a family.
The Ranchlands Community Association offers an optional membership program to its residents. While the membership is non-obligatory, the price of the membership helps pay for several community events, upkeep of the community services and organization of the association. Ranchlands’ amenities include several unique locations that aren’t found anywhere else in the northwest. Starting off with the green spaces, Ranchlands loves to enjoy the outdoors. The Ranchlands Community Park is a neighbourhood-managed park with ball diamonds and tennis courts. There are several other ball diamonds and soccer fields spread out through the streets of Ranchlands. The Ranchlands shopping is sparse and very localised with a few professional services offered throughout the community. However, the Crowfoot Crossing shopping complex offers many more options for shopping, eating, and entertainment. Within walking distance in Arbour Lake, Ranchlands residents can walk over to get access to one of the largest shopping complexes in all of the northwest of Calgary.
With a large Muslim population, there is both the Islamic Association of Northwest Calgary and the Muslim Association of Calgary. In places of worship, Ranchlands has many choices. There is the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Westview Baptist Church, and St James Anglican Church. These churches along with the Al-Salam Centre attached the Muslim Association meet the spiritual needs of many northwest Calgary residents.
To the south of Ranchlands, the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club have an incredible golf course with different membership options. Social members have access to the clubhouse and great rates while Equity Members own an equal share of the golf course and accrue interest in their club. Silver Springs Golf Club does offer professional lessons and a number of products sold within the clubhouse.
In Ranchlands, there are schools that accommodate the many young children that call this place home. The neighbourhood has St. Rita Elementary School, a Catholic school that offers religious education from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Ranchlands Community School is a smaller elementary that has Kindergarten to Grade 6 students in the Calgary public system.
In neighbouring communities, there is the Robert Thirsk High School in Arbour Lake, WO Mitchell School in Silver Springs, and HD Cartwright School in Dalhousie. These schools complete the missing elements within Ranchlands education districts. WO Mitchell is currently ranked 499th in the province. Ranchlands Elementary is ranked 620th and St. Rita is ranked 446th in the province, all according to the School Rankings by Fraser Institute.
