The community was first founded in the 1960s when it was added to the list of communities from Calgary’s east. The community was developed into a residential neighbourhood during the 60s and 70s with many of those original homes still standing today. We find that the community is very quiet and peaceful, a lovely break from the noise of the city, removed far enough to be quiet, and yet still close enough for those who travel. The neighbourhood has the borders of Memorial Dr, 52nd St SE, 68th St SE, and International Ave (or Highway 1A)
There are almost 9000 people neatly tucked away living in Penbrooke Meadows. The community is very much about single-family homes, although many of the houses here have been converted into a dual homes, converted basement suites to allow another option. We also see a few hundred duplexes, a handful of apartments, and quite a few townhouses as well. Besides the housing, we see that most homes have a family unit, neither older or younger than other communities in Calgary. We do see a slight correlation with the reduced education levels and incomes of the households here. There is also a percentage of the community that is first-generation Canadian, over 35% of the neighbourhood. That helps makes sense of the statistic that there is a higher proportion of people holding no certificate than those holding a degree from a university or college. We see a tendency for people to remain here for a while. Around 60% of the community have lived in Penbrooke Meadows for over 5 years, a significant statistic in longevity and value.
The Penbrooke Meadows Community Association offers a voice and an outlet to the residents here. The association has several events and programs running throughout the year, making a marked attempt to build community pride and a sense of belonging among the residents here. That includes sports programs for young children, several classes run out of the facility hall, and many community-wide events.
Penbrooke Meadows Amenities
Penbrooke Meadows residents have great transportation, removing the fear that it’s too far east to make commuting practical. The opposite is true when both Memorial Dr and International Ave offer entry points into the downtown. This is a major factor in why people have chosen to find a home here. They enjoy that the commute is so simple to their work or school. It also helps that Penbrooke Meadows residents live right next to the Stoney Trail ring road, a quick commute to places around the city like the airport or the south of Calgary.
The population has a large amount of green spaces in the neighbourhood. We find that most of the neighbours, however, prefer to find their activity and exercise at Elliston Park, a nearby public park with playgrounds, fire pits, picnic tables, and several open spaces to explore. This is also the site of the yearly GlobalFest firework display, giving residents a rare treat to have a first-row seat to the best fireworks in the city.
Shopping can be done at the industrial area just on the other side of Stoney Trail, with several large stores like Costco, Walmart, and many more options. Marlborough Mall is another local haunt, a site for dozens of stores and services in one location.
Penbrooke Meadows Schools
The community enjoys good schooling for its varied students. This includes Penbrooke Meadows School, an elementary with classes from Kindergarten to Grade 5. The other schools in the are are Forest Lawn High School, Jack James High School, James Short Memorial School, and GW Skene School. Father Lacombe High School is a Catholic high school with a ranking of 161st in the province for academic programs, but this faith-based school offers much more than just good academics. It’s very close and well respected by parents in Penbrooke Meadows.
