The community of Oakridge exists in Calgary’s southwest, along the southern edge of the Glenmore Reservoir. The community is defined by the borders of Glenmore Reservoir, 24st St SW, Southland Dr, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation’s land to the west.

The community of Oakridge has just over 5500 residents right now, choosing to live in homes that appeal to their needs. The first option in this neighbourhood means living in a single-family homes, making up around 75% of the options here. The remainder of the choices fall to townhouses and duplexes, popular options among the first-home buyers and childless couples. As this community stands, it’s mainly targeted to be a family-friendly community with several households with large families choosing to live here. The community attracts a higher wage earner, earning a good proportion more than residents living elsewhere. One-fifth of the neighbourhood is made up of immigrants, making a strong diversity in the nationalities represented here. At the monet, we see that almost three-quarters of the population has lived in their Oakridge homes for at least 5 years, a stunning statistic that’s very telling of the appeal of living here. The community is significantly older in demographics than other communities, maybe allowing that this community isn’t designed for the growing family but the established ones.  

The Oakridge Community Association operates a fully-equipped recreational facility that many adjoining communities love to use. But the primary function of the association is to offer a chance for locals to connect with other locals. They do that by holding community-strengthening events and programs that are key to keeping everyone involved in where they live. The association also plays a side role of providing a voice to the city council on behalf of many residents in matters of public roads and services within Oakridge  

Oakridge Amenities 

For the residents, they talk highly of their community and what it offers them. First of all, it offers them a great location. Sitting where it is on the Glenmore Reservoir, it’s the perfect mixture of residential neighbourhood and accessible community. It is central enough to be on the downtown core in minutes, perfect for the many commuters living here that need to drive to work every day. Access is set to become even better when the Stoney Trail ring road will pass right by here, due to be done in 2022. The community will have unprecedented access to the rest of Calgary, a feature that can’t come fast enough for many living here.

The community uses the nearby reservoir for recreation and fun. South Glenmore Park provides an access point to the pathway system that circles around the entire reservoir. Many inhabitants love using this pathway to bike, job, walk their dogs, and get some exercise with a view across the water.

Oakridge Schools  

Let’s talk about schools, because in a community that so values education, good schools are the key to living here long term. Louis Riel School is one of the few elementary/junior high schools in Calgary, offering good classes from Kindergarten to Grade 9. It has a very strong science program that many students opt in to from other neighbourhoods. Other nearby schools are John Ware SchoolNellie McClung School, and Cedarbrae School for elementary classes. After that, the high school options are normally Dr EP Scarlett High School or Bishop Grandin High School. The Fraser Institute ranks Scarlett as 36th in the province due to its strong academic programs and exceptional fine arts courses.
