North Haven Neighbourhood Information

North Haven is a suburban community in Calgary’s northwest quadrant. The area is more colloquially known as the areas of North Haven and North Haven Upper. This is more a local terminology as the neighbourhood is formally recognized as one community. The borders for North Haven are 14th St and Nose Hill Park on one side and John Laurie Blvd along the other. This forms a neat pocket of housing options that sits alongside one of the largest parks in Calgary.

The demographics of this community tell more about the people who live there. 2500 people call North Haven their home. The real estate in North Haven is more favoured to the single-family housing. Many of these homes are built in the 1970s in the popular bungalow style of that time, so they have large lots with big yards. Developers love to use these lots to develop some of the other options like modern condos and townhomes and attached duplexes. 16% of the population are immigrants from many different nations.  The majority of the households have a college or university degree. The people tend to live in these homes long-term, over three-quarters of them have a history of over 5 years in this neighbourhood. This speaks highly of the value and appeal of homes in North Haven.

The North Haven Community Association is a small organization, managing to run on a few passionate volunteers. The association offers events throughout the year. These initiatives help to link and connect the residents here into a united community that has strong bonds. These events include family dances, bike races, barbecues, and a Stampede Breakfast.  

North Haven Amenities

North Haven residents have it very good. They are well situated along Nose Hill Park, one of the most popular attractions for people here. This large park has 11 square kilometres of grass land and trails to enjoy. Residents can also use several of the parks and playgrounds in the neighbourhood, a popular spot for games and sports in the fields and diamonds scattered throughout the homes.

Inhabitants can use 14th St NW to get a direct access point to the city centre easily They can also get on to the Trans-Canada Highway, a major route through the centre of the city. This also places major institutions in close range, like the University of Calgary. This school has 30,000 students every year, many of whom choose to rent homes in North Haven for close access to their classes. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology is also very close along 14th St NW.  Residents can play in the Confederation Park Golf Course, a public course attached to a large park with several amenities within it.

Small stores can be found scattered around the neighbourhood and in the surrounding communities. For a more extensive shopping experience, North Hill Centre is close by. This shopping mall contains all the basic necessities and then some. There are retail stores, restaurants, and professional services for residents to use.  

North Haven Schools

North Haven is ideally located in the school districts of the northwest. It has several excellent located close by. This includes North Haven Elementary, a Kindergarten through to Grade 6 school with a great reputation in the neighbourhood. There is also Highwood School, Corpus Christi School, and King George Elementary which offers a complete French immersion program for fully bilingual education.   High School options include St Francis High School, John G Diefenbaker High School, and William Aberhart High School.

William Aberhart is one of the best high schools in the city and in the province. It currently ranks 11th on the official Fraser Institute ranking of the province. It has an advance program plus several international students attending every year. Diefenbaker High School is also very good with a prestigious International Baccalaureate program that accelerates students in their academic studies.
