The neighbourhood of New Brighton has been in development for over a decade. The master planned community is distinct from other neighborhoods, namely McKenzie Towne. The planned community is more free-flowing and formless than the rigid structure of its neighbour. Homes here, although planned and laid out, feel more ad-hoc and spacious/ The community’s borders are 130th Ave SE, 52nd St SE, and McIvor Blvd.
There are over 10,000 people living in New Brighton. This accounts for the majority of the community, although some sections are still under development. The community has a high percentage of homes here, single-family detached houses which represent around 75% of the housing options here. You can also find a good number of townhouses, a major feature around which several streets are designed. The community is very young, average ages of residents are holding around 6 years younger than the remainder of the population of Calgary. The community favours families, a large proportion of the population is geared for families or households with children living there. We find that the normal household here tends to earn more than other Calgarian neighbourhoods as well. The homes here have around one-fifth immigrants living here, a population that doesn’t really favour one particular nationality, but instead gives a home to several in New Brighton. The rapid explosion in size has resulted in almost 90% of the population moving here within the past 5-10 years. This tends to tell consumers that New Brighton is a popular, in-demand community with plenty to offer those living here.
The New Brighton Residents Association helps to regulate and oversee the planned community of people living here. That means the association is tasked with launching events and initiatives to build pride and bonds between people here. They also offer residents a chance to voice their concerns in matters before the city council. In the past, the association has offered family sporting days, winter activities, classes to learn new skills, and even offered child-minding for parents living here.
There is a major shopping complex located right next door. The 130th Ave shopping complex is full of hundreds of large and small stores, professional services, and restaurants to satisfy any taste and style. The place is designed to offer every type of necessity and convenience to residents here, and no one need travel more than a few minutes to access it all.
For those who need to travel for work, the community sits has great access to both Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail. These major roads connect the community with the rest of Calgary. And when the completion of the C-Train will extend to the southeast of Calgary in a few years, residents can access even more of the city with ease.
The parks and playgrounds in the community are designed with the purpose of providing local outdoor exercise and activity. These playgrounds are the hubs of the community, centres where people gather and children connect with each other. A central park has a pond with skating in the winter with a few hills surrounding the area for tobogganing.
To satisfy the needs of the population living here, several schools extend great education options to parents and students. These schools include St Marguerite School, Dr Martha Cohen School, and New Brighton School for elementary students. Seeing as this is the predominant age of students, thes schools have hundreds of enrolled students in their classes. Beyond the community borders, there is also St Albert the Great Elementary and Junior High, St Isabella Elementary, and Copperfield School. There are even a few planned sites in neighbouring communities for future schools. Since the schools in New Brighton are so new, there is little data for ranking purposes.
