The community of Marlborough is located in the northeast of Calgary, a destination of its own. The community was once the site for a few houses in the 1960s and 70s, majorly due to the industrial sector, but as the community grew, the residential side of it became more prevalent. Although that began in the 1970s, it wasn’t until the late 90s that the remaining construction was completed in the area. The boundaries for Marlborough are the Trans-Canada highway, 36th St NE, 52nd St NE, and Memorial Dr.

The neighbourhood is varied and diverse, a rich example of what Calgary typically looks like. There are 9000 people living here across the entire community. We have homes in various sizes and states, but the main choice is the single-family house, representing around 75% of the available choices here. There is also several hundred apartments along with a few townhouses and duplexes to be found here. This allows anybody, not just the house owner, to find a place in Marlborough. The community is made up of 35% immigrants, a relatively normal amount for Calgary. The median income is slightly lower as is the education levels as well. Marlborough attracts a middle-class community with affordable housing being the number one concern. Around 60% of the population has chosen to live in Marlborough for the past 5 years, often times for longer as well. It’s true that the vast majority want to remain where they are once they’ve secured a place here.

The Marlborough Community Association has a lot to do with their thousands of residents to look after. The job of the association is to bind the people together in love and pride for their community. It also represents a voice for the Marlborough towards city council and the matters pertaining to the neighbourhood. They do initiatives like scavenger hunts, family walks, clean-up days, and several other family-centric activities to build bonds between neighbours.

Marlborough Amenities

When asking what the main attraction to living in Marlborough is, residents have a few options that they turn to. The community is fairly well located for commuting and Memorial Dr and Trans-Canada Highway contribute to making that even easier. Both of those routes allow access to the downtown and to several other Calgary destinations. For those looking for easy drives into work and easier drives home, Marlborough is the solution.

For shopping, the residents often praise the local store as the hub of most of their needs. It’s interesting because you don’t find the average shopping complex here. Because of the higher number of immigrants and ethnicities, there are several Asian stores, speciality shops, and ethnic restaurants for the residents to use. Marlborough Mall is a major destination for not just the community but several communities around here.

The location of the neighbourhood makes it easy to get to the Calgary INternational Airport. It’s just a few minutes away and for those needing to travel internationally, or simply across Canada, this is the site for a good home base. The neighbourhood residents can be at the terminal in less than 15 minutes.

Marlborough Schools 

The parents and students here have a few options to choose from. There are Chris Akkerman School, St Mark Elementary School, Bob Edwards School, Marlborough School, and Keeler Elementary nearby. Saint Mark is pretty well regarded among elementary students and has a ranking by the Fraser Institute of 361st in the province. High Schools in the area include Forest Lawn high School, Jack James High School, and Father Lacombe High School. The Father Lacombe High School is ranked 161st in the province, a respectable score for its academic performances by students there. This Catholic faith-based school is attended by many Marlborough residents.
