The community of Kelvin Grove upon first inspection doesn’t seem like a residential neighbourhood. The dominating Mayfair building overlooks several other businesses and office buildings. And yet behind them exist a number of other housing options. The community was established almost 70 years ago. It’s boundaries are Glenmore Trail, Elbow Drive, 14th St SW, and 75th Ave SW.
The community of Kelvin Grove is populated by just shy of 2500 residents. Normally, a Calgary community is made up with single-family homes, but in Kelvin Grove, they are the minority. Apartments make up the primary choice with detached housing making up the rest. A few converted structures and townhomes are dotted throughout the neighbourhood. This is an affordable community, and by definition, that means that the residents here tend to earn slightly less than their Calgarian counterparts. It’s a stark contrast to the neighbouring communities of Eagle Ridge, Mayfair, and Bel-Aire with luxury properties abounding. The population here is made up of small families or couples. Henry Wise Wood has great academic advanced classes, a good introduction to several languages, and a thriving fine arts program that attracts several students from around the city. The Fraser Institute ranks it as in the top 100 schools in Alberta. Other schools include St Augustine Elementary School, Haysboro School, and Bishop Grandin high School.
