Okotoks Neighbourhood Information

The community of Okotoks lies south of Calgary, just off Highway 2. It is a small city in itself with every amenity expected from a small city. It sits along Sheep River and has increased in popularity over the past few years. Once just a town that was close to Calgary, it has not become popular for it’s commuter neighbourhood lifestyle. Many residents here choose to work in Calgary while living outside of its city limits.

This town has a population of just under 30,000 people. This gives Okotoks the title of the largest town in Alberta, bigger than places like Cochrane, Canmore, or High River. Many of those residents work in Calgary with no major industry forming the backbone of Okotoks. The population has rapidly been expanding due to the increased demand for housing here. There are almost 10,000 homes, from large estates sitting on acreages to townhomes and condos in newer communities. Of the residents, 93% of them said English was their first language, while the remainder are made up of first-generation Canadians with English as a second or third language. The community does trade with the many agricultural homes surrounding it, up to as far away as the southern BC border.

Okotoks has it’s own governing council with all services and business managed in-house. The community is very strong with several events that cater to the locals. This includes a yearly parade, the famous Teddy Bear picnic, car shows, food shows, farmers markets, and many other exclusive events that bring in visitors from all over Southern Alberta.

Okotoks Amenities

The community of Okotoks has plenty to offer, but now that it’s been firmly established as  bedroom community for Calgary, it has to rely on good transportation. Highway 2 is a strong link between Okotoks and Calgary and keeps everyone here within easy reach of the city. Residents can be at the city limits in fewer than 15 minutes. Highway 7 makes it easy for residents to get to the Kananaskis and towns like Black Diamond or Turner Valley.

Most shopping can be done within the town centre, with big stores like Costco, Home Depot, and Walmart providing good retail stores. Many restaurants and dining experiences can be found throughout the town, many of them unique to Okotoks life. The shopping is so good that many Calgarians living in the south prefer to travel to Okotoks rather than brave the crowds at Calgary shopping malls.

For alternative entertainment, there are several golf courses within or near the city, such as River’s Edge Golf Club or Crystal Ridge Golf Club. The Okotoks Dawgs is a popular local baseball team that draws large crowds during its summer seasons. Sheep River appeals to Okotoks residents year-round for family fun. The river provides swimming options in the summer and plenty of skating during the winter months. Public parks dot the town with several rinks, trails, and pathways criss-crossing the community.

Okotoks Schools

For the sizer that it is, Okotoks has more than its fair share of great schools. Most notable is the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, a private school with one of the top reputations in the province. It has ranked recently as high as 5th in the province by the Fraser Institute ranking systems. Other schools in the town include Percy Pegler SchoolBig Rock School, Okotoks Junior High School, and Foothills Composite High School.

Foothills Composite High School has almost 1000 enrolled students, many form the outlying communities surrounding Okotoks. It has a ranking of 85th in the province. Good Shepherd School is one of the largest Catholic elementary schools south of Calgary with nearly 600 students enrolled from Kindergarten through to Grade 6. The school ranks 41st in the province against over 800 other elementary schools in Alberta.
