The community of Harvest Hills is located on the border of Calgary’s northwest. It’s position along the Deerfoot Trail places it on the edge, almost exactly north of the city centre. It’s bounded by Country Hills Blvd, Harvest Hills Blvd, and 96th Ave NW. The communities around it include Panorama Hills and Country Hills. Most of the neighbourhood is residential housing, but on the eastern edge are several open spaces, parks, and trails for residents to use.
Around 7500 residents call Harvest Hills their home. This number has grown with the recent expansion of the neighbourhood into the former golf course that took up much of the footprint of this community. The residents here tend to earn more on average than their city counterparts. The community is made up of one-quarter immigrants, people from many different nationalities who love the environmental feel and suburban quality of the homes. Of those homes, 87% are single-family dwellings. These range from large and stately houses to quieter moderately-priced houses. Many of them have extensive yards and lots of land. Just a short drive away is CrossIron Mills, a large single-level shopping complex with just about modern convenience and store on offer. The neighbourhood loves to use this immensely popular location for all their shopping needs. Opposite the Deerfoot Trail is the airport, making this one of the most accessible neighbourhoods for those who travel by air often.
The proximity to major roads makes travelling easy. Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail are two of Calgary’s most busy roads, and the major intersection between these avenues lies just on the borders of Harvest Hills. Even without a vehicle, residents have a very established public transit system to get where they need to go. At the centre of the community is Harvest Hills Park, a large public space with a lake that provides excellent views and a peaceful spot to relax. West Nose Creek Park and the Country Hills Golf Club make up a large portion of the southern end of the community. They have extensive trails for people to walk, bike, and cross country ski. A great destination close by is Nose Hill Park, major centre for outdoor fitness activities like biking, running, and tobogganing.
There are many schools in and around the community, major educational centres that cater to a wide student body. The Ascension of Our Lord School is a Catholic school that serves grades 3-9, taking students all the way into high school. The Notre Dame High School is a senior high in Country Hills Village close by. John G Diefenbaker High School is the closest public high school for Harvest Hills residents.
Diefenbaker High School typically ranks in the top 50 schools in the province, according to the Fraser Institute. It has over 1500 enrolled students across the area and has an excellent International Baccalaureate program for advanced students focussing on academic success.
