The neighbourhood of Garrison Green has a rich story. It was once the site of the Canadian Forces Base, home to several branches of the military. When that closed down in the 1990s, the city of Calgary proposed three communities to replace the military grounds, Garrison Woods, Currie Barracks, and Garrison Green. This small neighbourhood is the result of that decision, and the recipient of future development. The neighbourhood is defined by Glenmore Trail, Crowchild Trail, and Richard Rd separating the neighbourhood from the university grounds.
The people of Garrison Green choose to live here for a variety of reasons. What you find here isn’t found anywhere else in the city. Over 25% of the community has an immigrant background, many of them students who live here for the proximity to Mount Royal University. They tend to live in small households, maybe two or three to a residence. The family units are also small, mostly having one or two children at home. The average wage is less than Calgary standards and the education levels are much about the same as the rest of the city. The community, mainly because of the university, is fairly transient, with many homes available at any time. Of those who wish to settle down in Garrison Green, they choose to live there for 5+ years simply because they appreciate everything this small neighbourhood has to offer. The majority options for housing are the townhomes and single-family homes. There aren’t many of them, but they do represent a good opportunity to raise a family and grow up in this community.
The Garrison Green community does not have its own association because of its size and demographics. They do, however, identify with the Marda Loop Communities so regularly join in with their events and programs. The community gets its sense of connection from the events and initiatives run by the Marda Loop association.
The Garrison Green population has much to be thankful for in their community. The first being that they live next to two major roads, each offering incredible access around the city. Crowchild Trail takes residents all the way into the city centre and the north of Calgary. Glenmore Trail connects people here to the western communities as well as shopping at Chinook Centre. For major shopping options, residents prefer the Westhills shopping centre. It contains hundreds of stores in an area dedicated to providing the best in retail, dining, and professional services. The trendy area of Marda Loop is very close by, a popular location with local businesses and one-off shopping opportunities.
The community is popular among university students attending the Mount Royal University. This school has 10,000 registered students every year, many preferring to live in nearby neighbourhoods. The school offers many Bachelor degrees in different fields like nursing, communication, and education. For the residents who like to live outdoors, the community has a few parks and playgrounds in the area. They prefer places like North Glenmore Park which has trails that travel all around the Glenmore Reservoir. These trails offer shady, secluded places for picnics and sports. Sandy Beach Park is a nearby public place with lots of off-leash areas as well as pathways for walking and biking. Lakeview Golf Course and Earl Grey Golf Course are good options for the neighbourhood golfer who loves a good course.
There are several schools around the neighbourhood, schools that are highly sought-after in the city. Bishop Carroll High School and Central Memorial High School offer options in the public and Catholic high school systems. St James School, Bishop Pinkham School, Lord Shaughnessy High School and Jennie Elliott School all offer more elementary, junior high, and senior high options. Students travel from all over the southwest to attend these schools.
