The community of Forest Lawn is a major community in the east of Calgary. For the most part, homes here are affordable homes, geared towards the low to middle-class portions of the city. The community was at one time a town that existed on the outskirts of Calgary. It was settled around the same time as Calgary was founded and remained proudly separate to Calgary for half a century. It was in the 1960s that Calgary named Forest Lawn as an official community and annexed it into the city limits. The borders of Forest Lawn are 8th Ave SE, 36th St SE, 52nd St SE, and 26th Ave SE.
The community of Forest Lawn has been named as one of the revitalising districts of Calgary with a lot of planned renewal to occur in the coming years. The Industrial area in Forest Lawn has redevelopment plan put into place in the coming years as well. There are over 8,000 residents living in the community right now. Of that population, we see at least one-third are represented by first-generation Canadians as well as many ethnic varieties of people as well. There are a large number of Vietnamese and Filipino Calgarians living in this area. Although the majority of the housing is single-family homes, the combined alternatives outweigh the detached houses. We see a great many suites and apartments, townhomes, and duplexes as well. The community is slightly lower in education and income levels than the rest of Calgary. This is directly linked to the number of first-generation Canadians living here. The association has been run and operated by Forest Lawn locals for nearly a century, overlooking the maintenance of the community and creating pride on where people live. The Forest Lawn community enjoys a healthy amount of amenities, ideally placed and situated in the community. The ethic shops and restaurants are just one example of them. These stores are operated by locals and serve the locals. They help bring a touch of diversity to the city. For other options, Marlborough Mall is very close by, offering major brands and franchises stores for all necessities.
The community has development plans to renew the tired and older parts of the neighbourhood. Given what the city has done to revitalise the community of East Village, it’s likely that property values will rise tremendously once the projects begin. As for transportation, Memorial Dr and Deerfoot Trail connect residents to jobs and schools very easily. Highway 1A also connects the city to places like Inglewood or to Stoney Trail. The Bow River offers many places for fishing, walking, boating, and biking along the river. The community. The community has a good connection to the Inglewood Golf Course, a local public course that challenges players on each hole.
The community of Forest Lawn is predisposed to offer the best schooling it can to those living here. This includes schools like Ernest Morrow Junior High, Forest Lawn High School, Jack James High School, Holy Trinity School, Patrick Airlie School, and Keeler School. Many of these schools offer specialised ESL classes and programs for the newly arrived students from other countries. These schools might not have the best academic records, but they have good reputations for integrating the many cultures in one class. Forest Lawn High School offers several options including dual credit, advanced programs, athletics, fine arts, and several other options.
