The community exists on the edges of the southwest Calgary border. This community is defined by many different boundary lines such as Fish Creek Park, James Mckevitt Rd, and 162nd Ave SW. The community was first built up in 1980 with homes that border the provincial park. Further construction was done to add thousands of new homes in 1999 as Calgary expanded southwest. At the moment, many homes here are at the very edge of Calgary.
The community, although very large, is also very strong. It has over 21,000 residents living here, more than Cochrane or High River. It’s no wonder that it forms a community to itself. The average resident here is very happy, according to the statistics and demographics. They make more than the average Calgarian and live a comfortable life. The main choice for housing is the single-family home with a smattering of apartments, condos, townhomes, and duplexes found throughout both sides of the neighbourhood. The community has a strong diverse population of 39% immigrants. A very high number of residents also choose to hold degrees and certificates from tertiary establishments. There is not a high turnover rate for people living here, further proving its livability factor. Almost 90% of the population has lived in Evergreen for over a year, a significant portion of those living here for 5 or 10 years. It’s a young neighbourhood with young families populating the houses here. Many of the residents have children at home, often 3 or more. This is the average household size and represents a healthy, growing population living here in Evergreen.
The Evergreen Community Association has its handful with the thousands of residents that rely on their programs to build bonds in the neighbourhood. This includes Stampede breakfasts, several family fun days, community-wide garage sales, and adult education programs. Come summer or winter, the association is working hard to provide an outlet and a voice for the inhabitants here.
The community exists in a nice spot, perfect location for access to Fish Creek Park. This provincial park has trails, bike paths, fire pits, a beautiful meandering creek, and several examples of wildlife that wander through the park. Residents love to escape the city by strolling through the trees in quiet solitude.
The community is very close to shopping complexes like Shawnessy shopping plaza, a major draw for residents here. It has just about everything, every service, every type of restaurant that you could need. Residents also love the convenience of their own C-Train station just a couple minutes away. The community also lives right next to Highway 22X and the future site of the Stoney Trail ring road, due to be completed in 2022. This will connect residents easily to rest of the city. 22X gets Evergreen residents out of the city and in to the mountains in under an hour. Many love to spend their weekends in the fresh mountain air of Banff and Kananaskis.
As mentioned, the community has a lot of young families, children and parents that demand good school choices. And Evergreen delivers with several excellent choices. Within the community is Evergreen School, Our Lady of the Evergreens School, and Marshall Springs School. The Fraser Institute ranks Our Lady of the Evergreens as 110th in the province, a worthy choice for faith-based education as an alternative to the Calgary public system. The high school of choice for the area is Bishop O’Byrne or Dr EP Scarlett High School.
