BROWSE EAST CALGARY COMMUNITIES
The community of Erin Woods lies in the eastern edge of Calgary, the last residential neighbourhood before the industrial areas of the city and the limits. The community has existed since 1981 when it was first introduced as a part of Calgary. The community has a range of homes to find. The defined borders are the CPR tracks to the west, Peigan Trail, 36th St SE, and 52nd St SE.
We don’t find many people in this small community. There are just 7000 people living here, a relatively little size compared to other Calgary neighbourhoods. But within these people, we can learn plenty about who lives here and why they choose homes here. Of the options for housing, the most popular choice is the single-family home. The detached housing offers over 2000 homes in the area, while there are only a few hundred apartments and townhomes. One-quarter of the population is from an immigrant background, many others from various ethnicities. The community is very diverse and welcomes many to live here. The population chooses to live within the community long-term, 80% for at least a year and 60% for at least 5 years in their homes of choice. This is a younger community than most, many young families represented here in the households. Of those households, we see a lower income level than many other neighbourhoods in the city. The community also has lower education levels as well, just one-third holding a degree or certificate of some kind. The rest of the households here have a family size of at least 2 children, sometimes more, many of whom are in an elementary program of some sort around the homes.
The Erin Woods Community Association is a small but active part of the neighbourhood. They work to ensure that everyone living here has a good life, enjoys their neighbourhood, and feels strongly about where they live. They also make everyone feel appreciated and heard, an important responsibility. They represent the community to the city council so that everyone can have a voice and impact on their work.
For the people living here, community matters. It also matters what’s around their community. They enjoy parks like Elliston Park for spending time outdoors, walking through the parks trails and paths. Biking, walking, and picnics by the tables are also activities residents like to indulge. The Inglewood Wildlands nearby is another site for outdoor activity, as is the Bow River and its pathways. But a good amount of green spaces and playgrounds can be found here, allowing children a safe place to play close to their homes.
The Marlborough Mall and the unique shopping in Inglewood are both popular locations for Erin Woods residents. The services and stores here are one-of-a-kind and offer every type of necessity to those who need it. Commuting is a major part of life for those living here, especially if you work in the downtown core. Although driving is easy along the Deerfoot Trail nearby, the public transit systems here also offer a convenient solution to get around the city. The Inglewood Golf Course is yet another opportunity to have some outdoor activity. The course is very accessible to anyone and provides a good challenge to every hole.
For discerning parents, here are the main school used by residents in Erin Woods. Erin Woods School, Valley View School, Holy CRoss School, and Blessed Damien School are popular elementary choices. Erin Woods School offers classes up to Grade 5 and has a good enrollment of nearly 400 students from this area alone.
