Sitting alongside the Elbow River to the south of the downtown area, Elbow Park is nestled away from the noise of Calgary. It’s neighbouring communities are quiet and affluent, very much like Elbow Park itself. The community follows the curve of the river, bordered by the prime housing real estate in Upper Mount Royal, and the communities of Altadore and Roxboro. It’s an older, mature community with a solid reputation. As people continue to live here, the homes get upgraded to reflect the affluent nature of the residents living here.

There are approximately 3000 inhabitants in this community. That makes it one of the largest wealthy neighbourhoods in Calgary. Smaller neighbourhoods like Bel-Aire or Mayfair have similar demographics, but those communities are smaller in size. The median income is very large, nearly three times what the average Calgarian makes. It makes sense in light of the immense proportion of residents holding post-secondary degrees and high-paying professions.

The average age of residents is 41, 5 years older than the rest of the city. The choices for homes in Elbow Park are limited to single-family detached housing. Nearly 100% of dwellings are houses. The large lots of land and set-back streets are ideal for homes and don’t suit the modern apartments popping up in other neighbourhoods.

The Elbow Park Residents Association is a volunteer board that offers the community opportunities to connect with each other. Their monthly newsletter talks about possible impacts to the community, upcoming events, and information about facilities and programs available to the residents. 

Elbow Park Amenities 

Elbow Park‘s primary source of activity and entertainment lie along the river. Elbow River extends along the edge of the community and has several walking and biking trails for residents to use. The community also finds peace and quiet at Sandy Beach Park and River Park, two popular hangouts for residents to use.

Elbow Drive runs through the middle of the community, taking commuters into the downtown core in fewer than 10 minutes. It’s a pleasant drive along the river’s edge and along the 4th St SW shopping district. 14th St along the western edge also takes residents towards the core and to the amenities within. Nearby Altadore’s Marda Loop is a Calgary's favourite destination with eclectic stores and unique retail opportunities to explore.

Elbow Park Schools

Elbow Park is spoiled for schools. Its location in the school districting puts in squarely in the middle of many beneficial education options. Elbow Park School is a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school with nearly 200 enrolled students each year. William Reid School offers education from K-4 students with an early French immersion program as well. Elboya School is a combined elementary and Junior high with excellent resources in French immersion as well.

Western Canada is a prestigious public school and commands respect for its attention to academic excellence. This is reflected in its current ranking by the Fraser Institute. It has a top 20 ranking, which it holds consistently every year. This is due to its extensive fine arts programs, its focus on the International Baccalaureate program, and the number of courses that it offers students. Elboya Elementary is similar in stature, a fine school with a solid reputation for educational excellence. Teacher-student ratios are kept low to provide a better teaching experience to the students.
