Up until the 1990s, Currie Barracks was a Canadian Forces Base for several different branches of the military including the Infantry Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force. You can still see the signs of those today in the military museum located just over the road. Now, Currie Barracks is being developed into a thriving new community. The borders of this neighbourhood are formed by Crowchild Trail, Richardson Way, Sarcee Rd, and the Richmond Green Golf Course. The people of Currie Barracks at the moment enjoy a peaceful life. They come from backgrounds that range far beyond a normal Calgarian. This area is made up of 25% immigrants, ranging from Asia to Europe to South America. Many of the neighbouring communities share a similar background. The people here earn slightly less than the Calgary average. Currently there are several renting opportunities in Currie Barracks. There are a few single-family homes, many of them newly built on land that was once designated for military purposes. Although as newer homes continue to be built, more options will be available in the near future. Placed along Crowchild Trail, this community has a direct line into the city centre, a few short minutes’ drive into the core business district. It also sits beside Mount Royal University. This university enrols 10,000 unique students every year, completing courses in several fields and disciplines. The university attracts many renters to Currie Barracks for its proximity as well as its affordable housing options.
The Richmond Green Golf Course forms the northern border of this neighbourhood, a popular location for first-time golfers. This public park is run by the city and is designed to suit beginners who want to have some fun. The par 3 course is a great activity for families. The Military Museum is located in Garrison next door and serves as a great way to remember the history of the military.
Shopping is easy with several stores located around the community. Major shopping can be done at Chinook Centre which is also just minutes away. Currie Barracks Schools
There are several schools in and around Currie Barracks. The Bishop Carroll High School is a Catholic high school, one of the best in the city. This faith-based school offers high level academic course as well as competitive athletic programs. Central Memorial High School is also close by, a public school with many registered students from the area. Master’s Academy is one of the city’s top private education centres and it is located just over the road from Currie Barracks. Sir James Lougheed School, A E Cross School, and Killarney Elementary School are all within walking or biking distances for students here.
Bishop Carroll is currently ranked 36th in the province. Master’s College is currently ranked 34th in the province according to the Fraser Institute aggregate of rankings.
