Cranston Neighbourhood Information

The neighbourhood is situated in the southeast of Calgary, one of the first communities in this area of the city that went through major construction in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The community is still developing but the finished section of the community is a thriving part of this section of the city. Its borders are Stoney Trail, the Bow River, and Deerfoot Trail. The community has some new homes that are being built on the lower side of the community, the homes that line the banks of the river.

There are now 19000 people living in Cranston, making it one of the largest communities in the whole of Calgary, not just the southeast neighborhoods. The main choice of the people here is the single-family home, a perfect solution for the large number of families with a mind to grow and settle here. The community does have a few duplexes, apartments, and townhomes as well, making room for the empty-nesters and the young couples. Cranston tends to attract people with a higher wage then other Calgarians, with several households earning well over the average of the normal family. One-fifth of the neighbourhood is made up of immigrants, new to Canada households that represent many nations living here. The community has diversity as one of its main appealing features for newcomers to Calgary. As the community is still developing, there is not a ton of data on the longevity of people, but the rapid expansion of households has certainly drawn the attention of many people in Calgary. Over 90% of the community has moved here within the last 5 years, taking advantage of the brand new property with exceptional views and amenities.

The Cranston Community Association has been working steadily over the past few years to build a sense of community here. The stated goals is to foster a bond between neighbours, to attract more residents to Cranston, and to represent the people living here in matters before the city council.  

Cranston Amenities

So, what is it that brings people to live in Cranston? It could be a number of features, but here is what the residents claim to love best about their community. At first glance, the community seems ideally situated for outdoor recreation. With Fish Creek Park close by and the Bow River valley right below the neighbourhood, this presents a number of outdoor options. Biking, fishing, walking, jogging, cross country skiing, and several more activities are within walking distance of many of the houses here. There’s also the benefit of two fantastic golf course nearby, Blue Devil Golf Course and McKenzie Meadows Golf Club.

Parks and trails also wind their way through the neighbourhood. In fact, this is another one of the features that builds good bonds with people here. It’s a tributary to the homes that connects everyone together.

The access in Cranston to the rest of the city keeps people from feeling isolated and segregated. With Stoney Trail and Deerfoot Trail intersections right here, residents can be downtown or anywhere else in the city within minutes. The commuters of the neighbourhood will appreciate the facility of using these on a daily basis.

Cranston Schools

Cranston is listed as one of the communities in Calgary with the highest number of preschool-aged children. This accounts for the large numbers of elementary schools in the area now and planned for the future. Cranston School, Christ The King Catholic School, and Dr George Stanley School are within the community. Cranston School only has grades K-3 in their school, but have almost 600 enrolled students in just those grades. Christ The King is currently ranked in the top 100 schools by the Fraser Institute system.
