Cochrane Neighbourhood Information

The town of Cochrane sits on the outskirts of Calgary’s northwest edge. It sits along the Highway 1A border and transects the Highway 22 which comes through it. The Bow River forms one soft border to the south while the large hills form a soft border to the north. Cochrane homes are mostly situated along the Bow Valley with larger housing options found up in the hills.

Officially, Cochrane has been named one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. Its current population is only 26,000 residents, retaining a small town feel within the community here. The population has nearly doubled in the last 10 years, a flood of people moving here to enjoy the benefits of small-town living with a large city’s presence nearby. Of the housing options available here, two-thirds are the single-family detached homes most chosen by families moving here. Several low rise apartments, townhouses, and condos form the remaining options here. There are several large estates and even acreages for sale in Cochrane. The normal household here has a family with at least 2 children living at home. Many retirees also love the country feel of the town with a relaxed and easy lifestyle. A good percentage of the residents here live and work within Cochrane while many also enjoy the easy commute into the city just 35 kms away.

The community aspect of Cochrane is one reason that people choose to settle down in this town. There are several unique events and festivals throughout the year that bring the people together and form strong bonds between neighbours. The communities within Cochrane all feel close ties to their town and work hard to preserve the friendly atmosphere of this place.

Cochrane Amenities

There is enough to do in Cochrane to make up for its isolated feel. Many residents choose to spend their time outdoors, partaking in several outdoor activities. Big Hill Springs Provincial Park is located just a few kilometres from the city and has lots of hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities. This preserve is a rugged area with a good mixture of trails and backcountry exploring. Besides that, the Bow River has plenty of areas for fun rafting, boating, and fishing. This area has some of the best fly-fishing in all of North America, a destination for many serious anglers.

The highway system in town allows residents to quickly enter Calgary or visit the mountains. Highway 22, also known colloquially as Cowboy Trail, is an access point to some of the famed wilderness areas that Cochrane is known for.  Several smaller communities within the town all enjoy the excellent shopping at major brands and chains within the limits. Once in Calgary, major shopping is also easy to find in Arbour Lake, one of the nearest communities within Calgary’s city limits.

Cochrane Schools

Several good schools in the Rocky View County are found right here in Cochrane. Cochrane High School is an excellent choice, one of quite a few in the area. In just the high schools, there is Bow Valley High School as well St Timothy Junior and Senior High School. St Timothy offers a faith-based alternative to the public schools. Elementary students can choose from Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School, Holy Spirit School and Glenbow Elementary Schools.

Bow Valley High School is currently ranked within the top 100 schools in the province, according to the Fraser Institute. Cochrane High School ranks even better in the top 50 schools.
