Chestermere Neighbourhood Information

The city of Chestermere was once a small town that grew into something more. It once held the title for the fastest growing town in Alberta and quickly realised that it could capitalise on that success and become its own city, governing itself separately from the Rocky View County that is a part of. They became the 18th city in Alberta and have still been growing in popularity. It’s borders are made up of Highway 1 to the north. 116th St NE, and Township Rd 240 to the south. It is centered around Chestermere Lake, once the name for this whole region.

There are over 20,000 residents now living in this city, making equal to the largest communities in Calgary. This represents a 3.3% growth rate, higher than Calgary’s 1.7%. This is consistent with other surrounding communities like Cochrane (4.8%) and Airdrie (5%)  This trend tells us that people are moving in smaller cities like this, surrounding communities outside of the city limits, because they offer so much to those living there. IN fact, since 2011, Chestermere has seen an increase of 34% in their population. Residents here tend to be younger, small families abound throughout the communities listed in Chestermere. There are new developments everywhere in the city, with over 6300 homes in the city. The majority of the population live in detached housing, with an average household income of $150,000. This is much higher than Calgary and shows that affluent families prefer to live outside of the city in the surrounding suburbs and communities.

Chestermere Regional Community Association cares the needs of the entire community. They provide a voice for the community with government and federal activities. They help strengthen the bonds of the city by offering events that anybody can attend. They hold markets, family fun days, shows, galleries, and recreational programs for all to enjoy.

Chestermere Amenities

The main attraction and draw card for Chestermere residents in the lake. In the summer, it’s a popular spot for swimming and boating, some fishing even. In the winter, it’s a great place to skate, or do ice fishing. Calgarians often bring their boats to Chestermere Lake to take advantage of one of the closest lakes to the city limits. There are parks and playgrounds that surround it, making it a hit among families living here.  The Lakeside Golf Club is another locale that residents often visit, a challenging course for beginners and experts alike.

The community has easy access to major amenities within the city. It takes just 15 minutes to drive to the Calgary Airport. The downtown core can be reached with 25 minutes along Highway 1. It’s just a short drive to major shopping and attractions for Chestermere residents to choose from. The city itself offers adequate retail and restaurant options, leaving residents the option of simply staying home when they want to dine out or do basic shopping.

Chestermere Schools

There are several schools in the community, leaving inhabitants here the option to school their kids within Chestermere itself. They include Chestermere High School, East Lake School, Rainbow Creek Elementary School, Our Lady of Wisdom School and Prairie Waters School. Many of these schools are very well received. Of course, there are also several schools in the Northwest of Calgary that are very accessible to parents wishing to travel into the city.

The Fraser Institute offers a ranking system that categorises these schools. One good example of a school is St Gabriel the Archangel high School, a Catholic school that offers excellent faith-based education alternatives. It’s currently ranked 21st in the entire province of Alberta. Chestermere High School ranks 150th in the province while Our Lady of Wisdom ranks 341st in the province of elementary schools.
