Bowness was once its own township but was amalgamated into the city of Calgary in 1964. It still maintains an atmosphere of independence and fierce pride among its residents. Of the over 5000 dwellings in Bowness, just half of them are owner-occupied, meaning that there is a booming rental opportunity in this community. Fewer than 45% of the homes in Bowness are single-family houses with the remainder of the dwellings in duplex, apartments, and townhouses. The majority of the homeowners are over 45 years old, representing an established and quieter neighbourhood.
Bowness is bordered by the Bow River on the north and Highway 1 on the south, with easy access to Stoney Trail to its east. This will become a major draw for Bowness real estate when the Stoney Trail ring road is completed in late 2021, establishing a circuitous route around the entire city. It takes just 10 minutes to get to downtown Calgary, giving residents easy access to the core of Calgary while maintaining a quiet neighbourhood feel.
The first point of access for a Bowness resident is the Bowness Community Association, a community-driven initiative to care for and preserve the neighbourhood. The community centre holds a skating arena, a community room, a studio room, an indoor playground, and a concession stand. The arena hosts weekly family free skating sessions with skate rentals available in-house
On the river is Bowness Park, a city-wide popular locale for all to enjoy the river and surrounding green areas. During the winter, Bowness Park brings in skaters to enjoy the large river skating area. During the summer, the park welcomes boaters, picnics, and families for summer sports.
The nearness to both the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Foothills Medical Centre is a major bonus for Bowness residents. These world-class facilities are within a 5-minute drive of any area of the community.
Bowness also includes the popular Shouldice Park, an athletic destination for summer sports for the whole city. Shouldice Athletic Park has several baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and football fields as well. Both the Calgary Stampeders and the University of Calgary Dinos train their football teams on these fields during the off-season.
Just over the Highway is the famed Winsport, located at Canada Olympic Park. This multi-purpose facility is a training ground for athletes, future Olympians, and provides family fun all year round. The park is open to anybody wishing to experience the best thrills and adventure within the city limits.
Bowness loves to create community, which is why they host the yearly Tour de Bowness, a short-circuit race known as a Criterium held in the community each year. It also hosts a road race and a hill climb for serious riders wanting to test their skills. The Tour de Bowness has been running since 2001.
For a smaller community, Bowness has a large share of school options for children in all surrounding neighbourhoods.
