Robert Thirsk High School opened in 2013, a much-needed high school option for Arbour Lake residents to choose. The school is still growing each year with almost 500 Grade 12 students registered for this school year. It has a focus on special needs students and those with ESL (English as a Second Language) requirements. The school was named for Robert Thirsk, an astronaut who worked for the Canadian Space Agency. Thirsk has strong roots in Calgary, attending schools and university here. He holds the Canadian record for time in space and currently serves as the Chancellor for the University of Calgary.
