Acadia Neighbourhood Information

The community of Acadia sits alongside Macleod Trail in Calgary’s southwest quadrant. It is easily defined by the borders of Southland Drive, Heritage Drive, Macleod Trail and Blackfoot Trail. The homes here have existed for several decades in an area of Calgary that has changed greatly since its inception. Now, along with a large residential portion, Acadia is home to several stores and restaurants that have greatly increased the value of living here.

The community of Acadia has a lot to tell through the demographics of the people living here. 11,000 residents are currently calling this their home, spread into nearly 5000 individual dwellings in the community. These inhabitants mainly live in single family detached houses with a good number of apartments spread throughout the community. The residents of Acadia can be pretty diverse with nearly one-quarter of them representing the first-generation Canadian population. They tend to earn slightly less than their Calgarian counterparts with many residents holding post-secondary degrees. A good half of people living in Acadia have lived in their homes for over 5 years. The people tend to be of an older generation with older families well represented in this neighbourhood. We find that the majority of households have just 2 people living in them, most of that in the apartments in the community.

The residents can participate in the Acadia Community Association, a volunteer-driven organisation that is very active here. The community can participate in many activities, programs, and events in the year because this ACA has the belief that they will unite the people through what they offer. Besides the typical family fun days and community garage sales, the association does have Stampede Breakfasts, recreational sporting teams, and great preschool and early mother care.

Acadia Amenities

The community of Acadia is well situated with many amenities surrounding its borders. The primary benefit of living here has to be the shopping. Next to the shopping on Macleod Trail, there is no end to the retail, restaurants, and professional services that are just minutes away. Major shopping can be done at Southcentre Mall or Chinook Centre, or the sprawling complex at Deerfoot Meadows. There are several large stores within the community itself within walking distance for the average resident.

The community sits on major transportation lines in Macleod Trail and Blackfoot trail. Deerfoot trail is easy to access and provides residents with immediate entry into the downtown core. Both Southland and Heritage C-Train stations are walking distance away as well, for those who prefer the clean, efficient public transit of Calgary.

Several green spaces and parks are located in the community. Acadia residents have great access to the trails along the Bow River, popular places to walk dogs, jog, or ride bikes. The Carburn Park and Sue Higgins Park areas are well-populated with residents here looking to spend some time outside. Maple Ridge Golf Course, a public 18-hole course, is located right near the community, a challenging course with a good reputation in the city for great golfing experiences.

Acadia Schools

The neighbourhood is well-situated among the school zones in Calgary. Residents here have great choices for schooling, from the elementary to the senior high students. Some schools include Acadia School, an elementary school with Kindergarten through to Grade 5 classes, David Thompson.School, St Matthew School and St Cecilia School. The Catholic school system has placed two excellent schools in this community because of the high demand for faith-based alternatives to public education. Lord Beaverbrook High School is a destination for many students in the south of Calgary.

The Fraser Institute ranks the Beaverbrook High School as 133rd in the province, with almost 2000 attending students every year enrolled. St Cecilia is ranked 225th in the province against other elementary schools while St Matthew is ranked 149th in the province. There are a couple private schools in the community including the Foundations for the Future Charter School.
