The neighbourhood of Abbeydale is positioned in the east of Calgary, technically considered a part of the northeast neighborhoods of the city. It has existed since the late 1970s and was built up to become the community we know today in the mid-1980s. Homes here have large lots and have a similar feel to several inner city communities. The boundaries of Abbeydale are defined by the Trans-Canada highway, Stoney Trail, 68th St NE, and the CPR tracks.

Examining the population of Abbeydale will give us a better understanding of how the neighbourhood could work for you. The community is made up of 6000 residents, all living in a variety of options for housing. The main choice is the single-family home while there are also a few duplexes and townhomes to be found in the neighbourhood as well. The normal household here makes slightly less than the population of other communities. We also find a demographic of at least 35% immigrants, not centred around any one single nationality or ethnicity. The community is highly favourable for families, the normal household having younger children at home. The community is slightly less educated than other Calgarian communities with a significant portion holding anything higher than a high school diploma or equivalent. The community does attract some longevity, with a large majority of the population living in Abbeydale for over 5 years. Many residents have a claim to a longer history than that as well.

The Abbeydale Community Association is the sole reason for that longevity, as it does tremendous work in retaining the people who live here. The association offers a voice for those living here, and it offers a chance to connect. With the stated goal of attracting more people to live here and be proud of Abbeydale, it does a fine job of creating initiatives and programs to build bonds in neighbours, many social events and gatherings throughout the year.   

Abbeydale Amenities

As mentioned above, the main reason people choose is the Abbeydale accessibility. The community is located on two major roads, and both of them serve the neighbourhood well. Stoney Trail and the Trans-Canada Highway offer entry points to the rest of Calgary. Meaning that if a commuter needed to get to downtown, to the airport, or quickly reach any other part of Calgary, this is the perfect base to start from. And the small city of Chestermere is also just a few minutes away as well. 

For the families living here, Abbeydale residents like the frequent green spaces in their neighbourhood, playgrounds and parks that help children enjoy the community and offer outdoor recreation. Nearby, Elliston Park is another natural site that offers picnic tables, bike paths, and many more open fields to enjoy the neighbourhood.

The Trans-Canada highway allows residents here to live close to several amenities like SAIT, the University of Calgary, or the Foothills Hospital. Nothing is too far away to have any real effect on the residents here, making this a popular choice for college students and graduate students.

Abbeydale Schools

Within the neighbourhood and in the surrounding communities, there are a few options to appeal to the discerning parent. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha School offers classes from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and has a range of classes. Catholic education here is a viable alternative to the public system and is well-liked by the residents here. Other schools in the area include St Martha School, Abbeydale Elementary, Eastside Christian Academy in the private sector, and Pineridge School for public students. Pineridge is ranked 785th in the province because it’s so new and caters to a large number of ESL students. Tekakwitha School is ranked 631st in the province, according to the ranking system of the Fraser Institute.
